Naxos have really tapped into a rich vein by releasing Robert Craft's Stravinsky recordings. This latest issue brings together two of Stravinsky's greatest choral masterpieces. The rendition of Oedipus Rex is particularly impressive with trumpets particularly shreaking out at the beginnning and end of the work.

The soloists are excellent though, I too, have reservations about Edward Fox's narration; he is too slow and deliberate. Some suggest he sounds disinterested but I think he is trying to add gravitas. I don't think that Stravinsky would have approved - personal affectation was the last thing he wanted in his music. Even so he fails to spoil a gripping performance.

"Les Noces" or, more appropriately, "Svadebka" comes from Stravinsky's Russian period and reflects his extensive research of Russian folk traditions and music. His use of a percussion only ensemble points towards the detachment of his next neo classical phase, sharing the concern for ritual to be found in Oedipus.

I had always enjoyed Leonard Bernstein's version with the Bath Festival Choir on DG. That version is bright, full blooded and maybe a little harsh; you're reminded of its close proximity to the Rite of Spring. Craft paid a great deal of attention to the text being sung in an authentically Russian way not just into the annunciation buit the style fo singing at key points. The singing, as a result, sounds less declamatory. Craft takes a less aggressive approach with the percussion ensemble: The effect somewhat gentler, therefore, than Bernstein's version. This recording was originally issued on the Koch label and not coupled with Oedipus. The tone seems a little softer than that for Oedipus.
