It wasn't just the sleuthing that I loved about this book, it was also the every day observations that are so well drawn. The cast of characters create such depth to the story as they are so cleverly woven in and around Lena, giving us a real sense of who she is.
Whilst there is light and humour that run throughout the piece, the author doesn't pull any punches and tackles some tough and very relevant subject areas, all of which are honestly observed and perfectly timed in the current climate.
In Strangers Houses is a great read and fabulous introduction to both Lena and her author, Elizabeth Mundy.
The main characters are well thought out, with real depth and you really care for them. The main protagonist, Lena, is a strong, determined young lady who’s really easy to relate to. She sets about solving a crime with a long list of suspects and methodocially whittles them down.
Love that it’s set in London, with authentic descriptions of North London.
Can’t wait for the next instalment. Will really make me think twice about taking my cleaner for granted!
When the police finally assign rookie officer Cartwright to the case, the duo delve into gangland killings and Turkish gangs as their friendship develops. I deducted one star as you do have to suspend disbelief a little with some actions Cartwright takes BUT if you can do that, the story flows and draws you in.
The characters in this novel are beautifully drawn. They stand apart from the cold and dismissive Londoners and give a real sense of family and connection to each other.
I would define this firmly in the "crime caper" category, but not so much in a jovial or frothy way. It is an easy read but with some deep layering of emotion throughout. Cannot wait for the second instalment.
Once again a writer who cannot talk about forensics without giving you a lecture on it ! . A good writer gives the same information by weaving it into the plot .
Glad to finish it .
