When I first heard that Big Finish were bringing Toby Longworth back to reprise his note-perfect Judge Dredd role I was expecting plays like those previously released. Then when I heard that they were to be mostly a talking book series I was a bit disappointed.
The "Doctor Who" CDs that Tom Baker recently recorded were still a huge disappointment for me so I was reluctant to try them.
However, I admire Toby Longworth's Dredd so much that I had to try it... and I'm glad that I did.

The story revolves around a Brit Cit woman who has come to MC1 to research a pulp author who has been locked up in the Iso Cubes for his subversive tomes... and a murderer seemingly brought to life with the sole intention of killing Dredd himself.

The tension mounts and the excitement ramps up as the story unfolds towards its very clever ending.

Music, sound effects and pacing are perfect and the writing is true to the comic with its weird crimes and colourfully named characters.

The reading by all concerned is excellent. I was also relieved that we got quite a decent amount of drama thrown in so we could enjoy Toby as Dredd all over again.

It's a testement to his characterisation that when I read a Dredd comic or novel I can only hear the voice of Mr Longworth coming from Dredd's speech bubbles or dialogue.

This, and the next CD in the series are an excellent fix for those of us who loved the Big Finish Dredd plays.
This is how you do a talking book!

See you on the streets!

Literary journalist, Eliza Blunt, arrives from Brit-Cit to interview a group of high-profile critics and publishers regarding the infamous "Slick Dickens" series of books. Rumors persist that a new book, written by jailed author Truman Kaput, is set to be published and Eliza is determined to uncover the truth, but before she can dig too deeply, her source is murdered...by Slick Dickens himself! How can a fictional character be killing real people? That's exactly what Judge Dredd is determined to discover for himself...

This release was the first in a four-part series called `The Crime Chronicles'. How these differ from the earlier 2000AD full-cast audio adventures from Big Finish Productions is that they feature only two voice actors: Toby Longsworth as Judge Dredd and Helen Kay as Eliza Blunt. These two actors are also responsible for the supporting characters, which in this particular adventure is a large chunk of the audio, as Toby Longsworth also voices Slick Dickens, the second narrator in this story.

The story is told by both Eliza Blunt and Slick Dickens, who alternate narration duties with Judge Dredd playing the part of a supporting character in this story. It works really well as Dredd is typically a man of few words, so having him narrate huge chunks of dialogue would seem slightly out of character. Eliza's journalistic character traits of being overly verbose and descriptive with her words is nicely referenced in the characters speech, where as Dredd tells her to just use "words of one syllable" when describing the crime scene. Alternatively, the sequences with Dickens have a distinct Film Noir feel to them, as well as referencing the character's obsession with fashion and style. It is interesting to see the unique way that Slick Dickens views the world, compared to the actual events.

I found the story to be really well-written and it didn't feel like a talking book due to the multiple elements, such as the varied narration styles between Eliza and Slick. It feels more like a full-cast audio than a two-hander, mainly due to Toby Longworth's skills at making his Slick Dickens voice and Judge Dredd voice sound so distinctive that you'd swear they were two different voice actors. His skill at multiple voices was displayed at its best in the earlier Big Finish release called, 'Solo', where Longworth plays ALL the characters in the audio.

This is a great start to a different approach to the 2000AD audios - unfortunately, The Crime Chronicles only had four releases and there hasn't been any news about forthcoming audios, which I hope changes soon because these make for enjoyable listening and are a fresh take on the Dredd universe in a new format. If your a long-term fan of Judge Dredd from the comics, or a recent convert from the
Dredd movie , this audio is accessible to everyone and has an engaging and fun storyline - I can't wait to listen to more from the range, as well as some of the previous series of full-cast audios.

Lawman of the future and long running 2000ad comic character Judge Dredd returns to audio drama in the first of a new series of talking books.

Complete on one disc that runs for 69 minutes, this tells the tale of Eliza Blunt. British lady obsessed with the works of american writer truman kaput, she visits mega city one to try and meet with the writer. kaput is famous for his stories of slick dickens, stylish killer who constantly outwits the judges. In particular Judge Dredd. Kaput has been in prison for years because of writing these [a tale told in the comic long ago]. But now someone is out there mudering people. And it would appear to be slick dickens himself. How can a fictional character be doing this?

Judge Dredd would very much like to know....

The talking book style means Eliza Blunt narrates the majority of the story. Played by helen kay with a very british accent that takes a little getting used to at first, but it turns out to be very strong performance, particularly in a few scenes where blunt has to have some strong emotional reactions. There are also dialogue scenes where she talks to judge dredd. he's played by toby longworth in a wonderful performance, as he comes up with a voice that is just definitive and fits the character perfectly.

Coupled with a script from dave bishop, who has a lot of experience writing the character in prose and for audio, you have a story that really feels like it could have come straight from the pages of 2000ad, complete with spot on characterisation for dredd and the quirky irony and hunour that the comic is so renowned for.

Some scenes are narrated from slick dickens viewpoint, toby longworth doing another great voice for these, in a wonderful film noir parody style.

And there are a few good twists and turns to the plot as well, which doesn't quite play out like you might expect.

A hugely entertaining listen and one that all 2000ad readers should enjoy.

The disc ends with a short trailer for the forthcoming second story in this range,
