Product Description

Review

Because of doubts about their moral character, there is an ordinance in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk banning the naming of streets after Shakespeare, Chaucer Byron or any other great poet; at St Peter's . . . a law forbids ladies showing their ankles in public on pain of being put in the stocks . . . This light-hearted trawl through statute books, both past and present, unearths dozens of similar laws, some of which, bizarrely, are still in force . . . Who said the law was dull? This England"

On first viewing this book looks like the standard type of book you'd get as a freebie from a book club, but in fact it's more than just an "also ran". It's a fascinating read.
The book is divided into lots of chapters, covering most subjects you can think of in law, with stories/facts relating to the use of the obscure laws through the ages.
It's hard to put this book down once you start reading. Some of the laws will shock, some will make you laugh out loud and others will just confuse the mind! It's also an excellent book to just pick up and read a section here and there, so is an ideal coffee-table read.
The only down points are the constant editing mistakes....both in spelling and grammar. Hopefully by the next printed edition those will have been resolved.
Over all, a very enjoyable read.

I enjoyed this book - it's a lucid account of old laws which the author believes to still be in force in England and Wales. Law students seeking something light-hearted should read it to escape from 800page legal textbooks.

However - law students wil also find it to contain surprising errors. Perhaps it could be used as a revision guide in this sense. At one point the author states that the House of Lords is bound by its own decisions - this (famously to students of law) has not been the case since Lord Gardener's 1966 Practice Statement. Furthermore as the book continues it does appear that the author really hasn't used legal resources and legal academics to check his work.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the quirky history of England.
This book contains a lot of old laws which, for some reason, are still laws even to this day.
This book provides an entertaining read, and also provides an insight into the history of these laws, how they originated and how they were upheld.
I do not regret buying this book, and is worth the money in my opinion.

I bought the book because i was bored to be honest and am studying a LLB course and decided i would like to cover some really old laws, and in doing so i stumbled across this little beauty.

Its great laughter all the way through and makes you both proud and shamed to be english, but its also been a great help in learning history to do with my law degree, helps to form a broad knowledge, but besides that, it is superb read for law or non law person alike..

Decidedly interesting if you're into this sort of stuff. Although the facts aren't brilliantly researched, with what appear to be several misapprehensions, the book is a work of entertainment rather than scholarship so that doesn't work too much to its detriment. As long as you don't cite it in any essays it's pretty fun!

As I live in Guernsey I was very interested in the section on the Channel Islands. It appears that this book was compiled/written in 2004 and on page 93 it mentions that the The Seigneur of Sark is currently a "Dame". Yes, Dame Sybil Hatherway did become Dame in 1927 but died on the 14th July 1974, since when there has been a man at the helm. This coupled with the use of the word "Jucats" (Jurats perhaps) and other inaccuracies lead me to wonder how accurate the rest of the book is. Never-the-less there are amusing anecdotes. A good book for the smallest room!
