This edition of 'Strange Fruit' by Billie Holiday is taken from The Ultimate Collection (Amazon Edition) originally released by 'Not Now Music' in 2009 . The track runs to slightly longer than 3 minutes.

Billie Holiday first recorded the song in 1939. The lyrics were originally written as a poem, Abel Meeropol, as a protest against lynching after his horror at seeing photographs of one such event. Strong stuff indeed and the perfect vehicle for Billie Holiday's smoky, raw performance. It's haunting. The song opens with a piano introduction originally added to lengthen the song for recording purposes.

I don't think you can listen to 'Strange Fruit' and not be moved.

Sound quality is good and the track plays well on tablet and laptop. This version of the track (MP3) was hassle free to download directly from the Amazon site.

Strange fruit by Billie Holiday is an eerie, sepulchral, requiem like protest about victims of lynching in the USA. My original copy suffers from terrible reproduction so I thought I might buy a better copy from amazon. Two versions in the MP3 list were unavailable until July 22nd or after, so I looked at the remastered version. The short sample offered was ( unusually) from the second half of the track, primarily the vocal, but the quality seemed OK. The full version I downloaded started with a flourish of trumpets, like bullfighting music, then straight into the vocal - omitting 70 seconds of piano solo which in the original establishes the atmosphere, sets the scene. I did not listen to more than 20 seconds worth and will probably never listen to it again - let it circle the earth in the amazon cloud for eternity, like a lost soul.

This remains one of the most chillingly beautiful pieces of protest music ever written and sung. It is hard to find on collections of Billie Holiday's work but if you have even a passing interest in her music you must own this.
