Review

Delightful (Good Housekeeping)

There have been many insipid imitators of the Alexander McCall Smith formula, grafting a cosy mystery into a depiction of a foreign culture dripping with local colour, but Khan has the quirkiness and hint of grit to make his portrayal of modern Mumbai memorable (Sunday Express)

Praise for THE UNEXPECTED INHERITANCE OF INSPECTOR CHOPRA (.)

Keeps things heart-warming while tackling corruption at the highest levels and violent crime at the lowest. Endearing and gripping, it sets up Inspector Chopra - and the elephant - for a long series. (The Sunday Times)

A sparkling debut with a zippy plot and an endearing set of characters (The Lady)

Enchanting (Woman & Home)

Chopra, diligent, incorruptible and not entirely at ease with shiny new India, is a delight, as is his redoubtable wife, Poppy - and Ganesha the elephant, once he has cheered up a bit, proves a very useful ally indeed. Utterly charming (Guardian)

A cast of intriguing characters that it will be a joy to see develop. But the greatest strength is the setting in the teeming city of Mumbai, from which the colour and atmosphere flows out of every page in this enjoyable, whimsical tale (Daily Express)

A quirky murder mystery... full of colourful characters and insightful details about human motivation (Irish Examiner)

Book Description

I love these books! Inspector Chopra has such integrity and he, his wife Poppy, the people at his restaurant, little Irfan, his awful mother in law and of course baby Ganesha are depicted with love, care and warmth. I love India so these books really feed into that with their colour and mood, bringing Mumbai to life. The eunuchs in the novels are treated with compassion and a celebration of their vivacity and colourful ways. I also enjoy the actual detective stories! The plots are clever and even though I'm pretty good at working things out, I am always surprised. Please do not stop writing these Vaseem Khan, because even with the accurate portrayal of, perhaps, the dodgy, shady side of power in India, the life affirming qualities of these novels make them a total joy to read - and I am already looking forward to the next one! Thank you!

This is a delightful detective story taking place in India. The detective, Inspector Chopra, is retired from the local police force in Mumbai, India and now works as a private investigator. The cast of characters in the stories include his wife, his mother-in-law, his former assistant from the police force, a street urchin, and, of course, Ganeshe, the baby elephant. I like the exposure these stories give to the culture and people of India. It is a very different and interesting world that has been provided by the author, Vaseem Khan. This is the third book in the series. I have read and enjoyed all three. I live in the USA and ordered my hardback copy of this book via Amazon UK in order to get sooner. I'm looking forward to book 4!

If you enjoyed the previous two books in this series you should like this one. It is a bit less to do with the personal life of the main character, Chopra, than in the earlier books.
However, it kept me guessing till the end and had plenty of surprises.

There is such a nice gentle pace to these stories that I find quite addictive. It's a good plot too which has nice twists and turns and involves other members of the extended family. More please.

This was a lovely book. The characters are so refreshing and I love the concept of an elephant being part of the 'team'. Everyone will want one afterwards. How good it was to have a detective not in the throes of abject misery and depths of depression. A lovely light hearted book with heartwarming characters and a good story with the flavours of India for good measure.
