Strange Cargo Vol.3

Amazon.co.uk

Before joining the a-list as deskman to the likes of Madonna (Ray of Light) and the All Saints, William Orbit was a jobbing producer working with Laurie Mayer and Rico Conning as Torch Song through the eighties before producing his own instrumental material as Strange Cargo, the first volume of which was released back in 1987. This, the third in the series, has an eastern theme, which extends from the sleeve art through to occasional samples that cut through the bleeping electronics. It inspired an extreme of love it/hate it reviews on its release and was in fact dropped before finally seeing a release on Virgin. Despite all of this baggage, the album has grown to be the most widely acclaimed of the four to date, with the opening "Water From A Vine Leaf" featuring the vocals of Beth Orton the epitome of ethnic ambience while "Gringatcho Demento" clearly sets the seeds to the later Hinterland. Looking for an album that sits between trance, techno, dub and world music? Look no further -- Kingsley Marshall

At times, I question Amazon's pricing structure, especially when they are asking £11+ for a 12 track download of music which is, surprisingly, 22 years old! As for me? I "cheated" and bought a mint-condition used copy for £1.60, including P&P! And I'm delighted with it as it's so relaxing whilst still being relatively "complex" in its' structure. I'd call this "Marmite" music, you'll either love it or hate it. Before you invest in either a new CD or the download, listen to the 30-second samplers as this might save you writing a 1 or 2-star review and quite a few pounds to boot!

.......than an absolute five star classic.

I have been an electronica fan since my childhood and this is most definitely up there in my top five albums of ALL time.

Water from a Vine Leaf always has and always will bring a shiver to my spine.

This album has stood the test of time and sounds as good now as it did when I first heard it back in 1993.

William Orbit..........you surround me.

From the outset this CD is a classic, even years after its initial release it sounds unique & fresh. So much other `electonica' fails to deliver in the `repeated listing' test. This disc does. Every listen brings forward new textures & themes buried deep within a multi-layered production. `Water from a vine leaf' is a total landmark track taking you through a real melodic journey. `Into the paradise' throbs with the driving beat of a club you have always imagined but will never see. The whole work is washed over by organic sounding analogue effects and Williams' trademark experimental reverbs & effects. These now `world recognised' production skills (Madonna - ray of light )lift every track beyond the ordinary. Other standouts include 'My best friend paranoia' which speaks knowingly to whole generation of `comedown kids' while `water babies' lullabies their children. Find out why Madonna describes William as a `genius' and why my babies were born to this CD...........

How this album got 5 stars? beats me completely. This is mediocre music at best, with clean sound arrangements perhaps but cruelly lacking inspiration. Melodies are flat, tracks all sound the same and the sound itself is a poor re-rendition of electronica/ambient sounds of the beginning of the 90s. I put 2 stars just because 1 star would be "I hate it", and that cannot qualify as this soporific collection merely leaves me totally indifferent. I bought it partly based on the Amazon rating (will teach me) and partly because I didn't know what this famous William Orbit was doing by himself: well, not much, and to be frank I wouldn't be worse of not knowing...

Followed Mr Orbit's work since discovering him twiddling the knobs on S-Express re-mixes in the late 80's then took the rollercoaster ride into the 90's ambient craze that swept up all the none ravers or Jungle Cru. 23 year old album that has (considering how niche ambient was) really worn very well .. still worth a roll out in the car and not something embarasing you roll the windows up too, Water from a vine leaf is just so god damn delicious it has to be one of my top 10 fave tunes of all time (have it on in the car at the moment actually :)). It has been said else where that this can be a little Marmite, but you could level that against a lot of the early-mid 90's trance and chillout but this is a lot more approachable than the likes of Air Liquide or Wagon Christ, also I would add that its more tuneful than the likes of the beautiful Lifeforms by Future Sound of London, if you want, dare I say POP ambient you seriously cannot go wrong with SCIII. Strunning album and well worth having in the car for those summer drives to the coast or some random valley somewhere in Wales or Scotland :)

Only a personal view but I much preferred volume 1 where there were no serious vocal interruptions. This volume began to drone on after a while and got on my wick. This sort of oriental whining had been done so often (and so much better) before this album was produced that it was starting to sound cliched back then-it sounds even more naff and pretentious now! Perhaps i'll give it another chance later and see how I feel about it then.....as for now, however, ho, hum!

Excellent variety of music. The CD has been mastered well, not loud! My favourite track is no.1. Water from a Vine Leaf.
