I have been wanting to read the author's Love Always series for forever, so I was excited to get my hands on this standalone by her. Based on the synopsis, I was honestly expecting to read a complete earth shattering tear-jerker when I started this book. But instead, this was a celebration of the relationship between Ali and Maverick, told in flashbacks of how they cam to be at this moment, with small snippets of real time in the middle. The book takes place in a really short time, but the memories were over the course of their entire relationship.
Maverick was absolutely dreamy, regardless of the problems that developed in the relationship, but he was the most patient and insightful of men. Ali was a more damaged, reserved character, who learned to like herself through her interactions with Maverick. I was interested in how the author used colors to express how Ali was feeling when she had no words. It was a unique new perspective I had never experienced in a book before. As a side note, the wedding decorations were hands down my favorite part of the book, and Finley was the best friend a girl could have asked for.
I thought this was a really sweet story about a shy damaged girl gradually being healed by a charismatic, caring man without her even being aware of it. Instead of overwhelming sadness, I saw the growth of hope and realization of love. This was a sweet, romantic story with some very hot scenes added in, as well as some traumatic realistic moments to keep things in perspective. The story was very well written and reinforced for me how much I really want to read the rest of the books by this author.
I received this title in return for my honest review.
Was Love Always, Kate, your kind of book? How about Me Before You? The Story of Us is nothing like these two, and yet they have so much in common. As contradictory as that sounds, you'll soon see what I mean.
Real, sweet, warm. Tragic, beautiful, and hopeful. The Story of Us are all of these things, and once finished, it left me thinking about it for weeks. Everyone deserves to read a love story like this. One that, while easily devoured, doesn't instantly leave, even if you jump right into another book.
I read it first thing this year. Already I know it won't fall out of my top ten of 2017.
This book did exactly what I love books to do....it made me feel all the feelings. I laughed and swooned and cried and cheered. Happy, sad, scared, excited...they all come into play here. But more than anything, this book made me think about everyday, about how I treat people and what I value.
The characters were real and exceptional at the same time. It was great to read a book with characters that felt like people I could meet IRL. Maverick was just about as swoon-worthy as they come, I fell for him within a few pages of meeting him. Alieya is a college student and an artist and still a little shell-shocked and gun-shy from the end of a long term relationship. Everything about her is just incredibly real. Her reactions would be my reactions, I just understood her. Some of the other characters were great too, especially Finley, Alieya's best friend. She was a great addition and I would actually love to read her story one of these days.
I think what set this book apart is the way D writes emotion. It's beautiful and crystal clear, everything on the page for you to experience with the characters. Honestly...I will read everything this author writes and I will likely read this book again and again.
I had previously read 3 of D. Nichole King's books and I had absolutely adored them so the bar was set very high for The Story of Us. I shouldn't have been concerned, because this book exceeded every expectation I had!
By the time I had finished the first chapter I was completely enthralled and I stayed that way throughout the entire book. As usual, I fell head over heels in love with Nicole King's hero. Maverick was perfect without being saccharine sweet and the heroine Ali was likeable and relatable.
Their love story is told in a unique and engaging way that leaves you begging for the next chapter. I loved the approach Nicole King took in structuring this story. It is almost like each chapter has its own cliffhanger. The message this book conveys so beautifully is one we all need to hear; be mindful of what you say and don't say to the people you love because there is no guarantee that you will ever have the chance to tell them anything else. Love is precious and while it is very fragile and can be gone in an instant - it can also last an eternity.
Don't miss out on Mav and Ali's amazing love story. I know I'm already missing them!
