Product Description

The STORY OF LOVERS ROCK is a feature length documentary that tells the story of a genre of reggae that was created in the UK. It was influential and very successful in the 70s and 80s and still lives on today. Along with the music came the dancing and fashion that created a unique brand of lifestyle. Inspired by female artists Lovers Rock was the first girl power music in the UK at a time of heightened political tension and racial unrest. Menelik Shabazz, (director of Burning An Illusion) charts the rise of Lover s Rock, often dubbed romantic reggae . Through live performances from the leading exponents of the genre along with humorous reflections and interviews the film brings back to life the era when the music was at a highpoint. Lovers Rock gave a voice to many first generation black British young people but not exclusively. Along with the music came a unique fashion style and scrubbing an intimate dance between male and female that defined the Lovers Rock brand. The film consists of memorable live performances, interviews and light-hearted comedic memories that provides an untold portrait of the post Windrush generation. Artists include: Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson, UB40, Jean Adebambo, Maxi Priest, Michael Gordon, Sandra Cross. Also featured are comedians; Angie Le Mar, Eddie Nestor, Robbie Gee, Wayne Rollins & Glenda Jaxson.

I grew up on lovers rock, its the best music ever. I saw this film at the movies when it first come out last year. it brought back wonder full memories, happy times, the way things use to be. The way we danced, rubbing down wall paper, the sweat, holding on to a nice dance with a woman who melted her body into yours, as if you were making love, the way we use to move and sway and rock with the riddim nice and slow till the next morning. The story of lovers rock makes you feel good, it brings back the vibes, it makes you want to go to revive dances and boy cot the sound clashes. The story of lovers rock I hope, will be enjoyed by the younger generation who will be inspired to carry on the lovers rock music which my generation developed and loved so much. lovers rock can lift you up when you are down, or you are feeling oppressed and let down by the system. it can also make you feel sad if a tune reminds you of a loved one, past, present, or even imaginary. Personally it reminds me of........ I think i should stop there. chow.

This social historical account of Lovers Rock took me back to the days I grew up in the East End of London - sneaking out late on a Saturday night to visit clubs my Christian parents would have been horrified if they found out. Lovers Rock was not purely an African Caribbean social activity but those of us with parents from the continent were also part of this era such as Jean Adebambo who hailed from Nigerian roots. It is a brilliant and amusing narrative that touches on issues of gender, racism in the music business which was reinforced in the wider society and the alienation Africans in Britain faced at the time. It illustrates how we turned inwards and developed a genre of music that spoke to our emotional, psychological and social needs. Its an excellent social history of the period. Menelik Shabazz - I salute you!

Great documentary on a pivotal moment in Black music history. Those of us who were there in the early 80s can recall every dip and sway with nostalgia. The term nostalgia describes a sentimental longing for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations and perfectly sums up what this DVD means to us.

It was great hearing some of the major artist at the time (some still performing I might add), explanations about the music and dancing (dirty dancing - we called it rub-a-dub - that would make Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey look tame!!) and the great comedy sketches from Robbie Gee et al.

Buy this collectors item - wicked!!

The story of Lovers Rock - Well, what can I say. This film brought back memories of how those day were so so nice. I'd forgotten all about the paraffin heaters till I saw it in the film. Young people had respect for each other and music was all about love. I could go on and on but I'll just say, THOSE DAYS WERE JUST NICE!

Interesting documentary about lovers rock music, a unique British invention which was influenced by Jamaican reggae music and in turn influenced the development of Jamaican reggae music. I think that the documentary could have included more artists, and I am sure that the maker of the documentary would have like to have done so, but I appreciate that the documentary was a labour of love and took many years to come to fruition. I'm not sure about the interludes featuring comedians but that's a matter of personal taste. I would have preferred a more academic approach. The film maker Menelik Shabazz produced the seminal Black British film 'Burning an Illusion' and I would definitely buy anything produced by him.

This was a throw back in time for me, there was too many things I saw on here to remind me of my years as a teenager, from the music to the decor. I remember watching it on the TV a few years ago, I have told so many friends its now available on DVD so we can all have it for our private collection.
I am still a lovers girl at heart and its great for this reminder. its got us 40's plus out on the dance floor again and going back to some great revival events, which mainly seem to be happening in London, but it's usually worth the journey to hear some tunes you use to go weak at the knees at.....

Good docu-drama charting the social history of a black sub cultural group in the late 70's early 80's. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane and the behind the scene discussions from the artists perspective. It wasn't the only black youth subculture at the time though the movie seem to attach itself to the wider issues facing a first generation Afro-Caribbean population.

I too experienced many of those issues but as a teenager was simply following the latest fashion!
