About the Author
I was born Adrianna Taylor in 1987 to middle-class parents and, although we were not wealthy, we lived a comfortable existence. My parents split when I was 16. As a child, I was interested in becoming a vet. But I never had a clear idea of what career path I would take. I left school and went to sixth form, but it didn't grab me, so I moved on to doing a hairdressing course. Whilst studying, I also worked in retail. But my life was uninteresting, and I used to imagine working in a strip club and earning loads of money every night. It seemed a more glamorous way of life than helping choose hairstyles or doing price checks. At 21, I plucked up courage and got my first professional pictures done. I posted them on a modelling site and started to get regular work. 2 years later, I progressed into the fetish side, as my enthusiasm for straight modelling was drying up. Working under the name Mistress Hallie Brooke, I soon built a successful reputation, as I was a young, attractive, dominant woman, standing out from all the other matriarchal-looking women who inhabited the shadowy world of Dominatrixes. I had not always had a dominant persona. As a child, I could have been described as a ‘wallflower’. But as I grew older, I changed. In the back of my mind, I had always had an interest in kinky and taboo things, and as a young woman in my early 20's, I liked the idea of tie and tease, bondage, and role-play. I liked dressing up in uniforms and acting out a character. I had never planned on being a Dominatrix but it seemed to be a natural progression from modelling. When I eventually found a willing partner, who also liked the idea of trying kinky things, we rushed to a local sex shop and invested in some handcuffs, as well as a collar with handcuffs attached. We had fun trying them out. The rest is history and you can read all about it The Story of Control.

The Story of Control is basically Adrianna’s memoirs as we learn about what life is really like for this seemingly shy, girl-next-door who has been working as a Dominatrix for the past three years. Adrianna shows us what it’s like to lead a double life, how she keeps her occupation hidden from other people and the impact that this can have on relationships and her life in general.
The Story of Control is described as being ‘the real life 50 Shades of Grey’. I’ve not actually read 50 Shades of Grey so I couldn’t possibly comment on how the two compare, but I assume that if you enjoyed 50 Shades of Grey then you’re bound to enjoy this.
Adrianna’s real life experiences are VERY real indeed and they certainly don’t hold back, so be warned (it gets very detailed at some points) but after all, this is a real life memoir so I guess that’s to be expected. There were points in this book where I was cringing and literally reading the story through my fingers; it will shock you, make you laugh, make you think that people are downright strange and also make you wonder what really goes on behind closed doors. How well do we know anyone? It’s quite scary when you think about it!
Despite all of Adrianna’s (or should that be Hallie’s…) experiences working as a Dominatrix, The Story of Control is ultimately about one girl trying to navigate life and overcoming the hurdles that she faces. Living a double life is no easy task but I loved how we get to see both sides of Adrianna through her work and her normal day-to-day life. She comes across as really likeable and makes for a great narrator. Boy, has she had some experiences…
I found The Story of Control to be a really fascinating insight into Adrianna’s world. Whilst it’s not necessarily the kind of book I would usually go for, sometimes it’s good to give something different a read and I’m glad I did in this case. Despite there being one or two parts that made me sit up and think how weird people are and the graphic detail of some scenes (although that’s to be expected) The Story Of Control was like snooping at someone’s personal (and hugely fascinating) diary and being such a nosey person I loved that aspect of it. If you’ve ever read The Secret Diary of a Call Girl then I think you’ll enjoy this as it’s very similar. Shocking, fascinating, scandalous, and extremely honest, The Story of Control shoes what life is like for an ordinary girl with an extraordinary job…
It’s the review that most of my friends have been waiting for. Adrianna Taylor lives a double life, earning a living as a dominatrix – The Story of Control is her memoir, and while she’s only the same age as I am, she’s had enough experiences to last a lifetime.
A word of warning – the sex scenes are graphic, and they’re based on real events. If you’re prudish (or squeamish) then this isn’t the book for you, despite the fact that it’s absolutely fascinating. In fact, I enjoyed reading it so much that I broke one of my own rules – there were a lot of typos in it, the only let down, and that’s usually an automatic 6/10. But screw the typos, this deserves an 8 regardless.

Adrianna is a woman who slipped into the life of a dominatrix quite by accident. She wasn’t a natural dominant, and never played in the scene herself, but after being asked to spank a man while modelling for a fetish photo-shoot, her curiosity was piqued. There’s never any sex involved, and she’s clever and witty rather than vulgar and obscene, but some of the fantasy scenes she constructs for her clients are quite elaborate and imaginative.
Although she enjoys elements of it, it’s very clearly just a job - albeit one with odd hours. We like to fantasize about it being a 24/7 lifestyle, but she reveals to us the challenges of keeping secrets, putting up appearances for the neighbours, shifting between personalities, and taking awkward calls from clients in public. She also introduces us to the stress it causes in her relationships, with her boyfriend often feeling put out by how the role of Mistress Hallie Brookes intrudes on the life of Adrianna Taylor. It’s when that stress becomes too much, and she feels the need to break things off that the story really gets interesting.
During a night out a fetish event, she meets a very convincing cross-dresser named Suzanna, who kindly asks to have her bottom spanked. There’s an immediate spark there, and the night ends with her uncharacteristically offering this complete stranger a ride home. Over the course of the story we watch as Adrianna deals with the everyday tasks of life and family, the busy schedule of a Dominatrix who is very much in demand with her clients, and her odd relationship with Mark/Suzanne, which is equal parts work, romance, and professional partnership.
The key theme running through the entire story is one of control. Whether it’s with a client, a lover, a family member, or a friend, she needs to feel in control of the situation. It’s a need rooted in an unhappy childhood, and while it causes anxiety sometimes, it’s a healthy part of what keeps her grounded, and which allows her to control that intersection of fantasy and reality. It really is a fascinating story, constantly moving back and forth between the erotic and the mundane. It’s never really erotic, but it is exciting to see how much passion, energy, and attention she puts into both her scenes and her relationships. An odd sort of tale indeed, but one with an honestly that I think many readers will appreciate, and which serves to draw us even deeper into her world.
Adrianna Taylor breaks through that shroud of mystery and reveals herself as both the Dominatrix and the girl next door. Reading her story of how she delicately balances her work life and personal life is a fantastic read. The more I read the harder it was to put the book down.
While Adrianna is completely in control of her work life, her personal life seems to escape her at times. Trying to maintain a relationship with her boyfriend while seeing clients turns out to be more difficult then it seems.
Adrianna’s alter ego Mistress Hallie Brookes has a solid client base of men looking to see her; at times it is also tense as there are moments that teeter on men who appear to be border line stalkers eager for her full attention. There were times when she was meeting new clients in strange places, and I found myself fearing for her safety.
The one down side to the book was when I came to the end and found myself wanting more. After I finished reading The Story of Control I felt like I was now a part of her life as I experienced the high times with her of meeting someone and the lows as a close relationship came to an end.
I found the book to be intriguing and well written as Adrianna exposed the intimate details of her life.
