Product Description

From the Publisher

Stories of Historical Figures Written for ages 6 to 8.
America’s heroes come to life for children, thanks to this 1895 classic by Edward Eggleston.

Edward Eggleston captures America’s heritage in the best way possible for children: with imaginative stories about great Americans. Stories written at a time when Americans wanted their children to be proud of their country. Stories that bring the people and the times to life. Stories designed to give hours of reading pleasure.

52 charming sketches from the original book, first published back in 1895, perfectly complement the text. The 52 chapters here include stories about war heroes, statesmen, explorers, inventors, writers, artists, scientists, and just plain ordinary people who made a difference. The lives of these men and women wonderfully illustrate the virtues children need to learn. Virtues like courage, unselfishness, honesty, patience, ingenuity, kindness, independence, and perseverance.

You get stories about great American men and women like...

Daniel Boone • Francis Scott Key • George Washington • Eliza Lucas • Marquette • Benjamin West • George Rogers Clark • Daniel Webster • William Penn • Louisa May Alcott • Charles Goodyear • Kit Carson • Thomas Jefferson • Benezet • Robert Fulton • Henry Wadsworth Longfellow • Thomas Smith • Horace Greeley • Lewis and Clark • General Marion • Benjamen Franklin • plus over a dozen more!

For children — and even for adults — Edward Eggleston’s writing nourishes a love and appreciation of America and the people who made it great. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good stories but how different races of people are described is pretty dated 3 April 2014

Our 5 year old son loves hearing these stories. He loves hearing them read over and over again However we edit them a bit when we read them. As he starts to learn to read more independently, we will shelf this book and replace it with other books then bring this book out later when he is older and better able to understand historical context. Basically Indians are 'savages' and always bad. And the racial divide between 'white man' and 'negros' is very apparent with 'negros' having a much lower social standing. Our son will need to understand this history eventually but right now I don't think how some of these stories are written is appropriate for a 5 - 9 year old black or white.

This is a fantastic little book that brings history to life for young readers! My 8 year old loves to read the stories and is amazed by the connections he is making to historical figures. It's also a great time capsule to see how writers viewed American history years ago compared to today. Comparing and contrasting are easy discussions when combined with modern writings of these figures in our history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stories of Americans for My Little Americans 7 Mar. 2012

My daughter is 5 years old and we just started this book. The stories are short and interesting, still I was worried that they wouldn't hold her attention. I was planning on doing one or two stories per week. Instead she wants me to read two new stories per day....and on top of that, will I please read the previous days stories before we are done?

All I can say is "Wow", my 5 year old enjoys these engaging history stories and I couldn't be more pleased.

When we are done with this book I plan to move on to the American History Stories also publish by Yesterdays Classics.

My elementary kids love the Eggleston books! Great for homeschoolers or for anyone who wants their children to learn the real history of our country and the people that made us who we are.
