The great thing about all six of these books is the way that I feel I am getting to know the characters. Reading this book was like meeting up with old friends and picking up just where you left off the last time you saw them. This is something that the best writers do and it's something I really appreciate as a reader. It is a joy getting to know Nicholas and his family and friends, seeing relationships develop over time without haste. Don't read this book if you expect everything to be wrapped up in one go because it won't be!
Ann must either be an expert in this period or has done a lot of research, most likely both. Reading this series of books will tell you a lot about the lives of ordinary people in this period - yet this is all done through the story and the characters themselves. You never once feel as if you are being lectured or that the author is showing off their knowledge and research. This is something which as a reader I really appreciate and I wish more authors could or would do this!
If you're new to this series, you could read this book as a stand-alone but I really do recommend you read the series from the start. You will come to know the characters much better and therefore empathise with the situations they find themselves in far more. In order the books are:
The Bookseller's Tale (Oxford Medieval Mysteries Book 1)
The Novice's Tale (Oxford Medieval Mysteries Book 2)
The Huntsman's Tale (Oxford Medieval Mysteries Book 3)
The Merchant's Tale (Oxford Medieval Mysteries Book 4)
The Troubadour's Tale (Oxford Medieval Mysteries Book 5)
The Stonemason's Tale (Oxford Medieval Mysteries Book 6)
Go ahead, give yourself a treat and read them all!
All in all I thouroughly enjoyed the story and would buy more from this author.
Mrs Swinfen, you and your medieval tales will be sadly missed.
