Product Description

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, about 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) west of Amesbury and 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) north of Salisbury. One of the most famous sites in the world, Stonehenge is composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. Model your own Stonehenge in 1:135 scale with real ceramic stones with this Aedes Ars kit. The materials used look like the original materials and the pieces' quality is based on the company's production processes. The kit is presented with all the necessary material to model that ancient famous stone construction. The kit contents a Wood base, a cardboard base, graphical instructions based on a photographic sequence, 125 ceramic pieces, glue and synthetic grass and marble sand for model decorations. For an accurate result it is recommended to smooth down some of the different pieces with sandpaper, achieving a more attractive and realistic result.

I am just in receipt of this kit, and before I start making it, I thought I'd give a thorough review. Other reviews on the web - and even the manufacturer's site - seem a bit short on detail. The kit contains everything (except a craft knife and paint) to make your own 1:135 version of Stonehenge. That's Stonehenge as built/complete, not the sorry pile of stones in Wiltshire today.

Contents of box: card base plan of Stonehenge, two bits of hardboard to glue the base to (280mm x 280mm total size), pictorial (i.e. multi-lingual) instructions, brief history of Stonehenge (English) on one sheet, green fluff (grass), white marble granules, glue (looks like standard PVA), and bags of raw ceramic stones. The assorted bags of stones are not labelled, so I suggest spending some time sorting out what's what when the kit arrives. What stones go where is all explained on the instruction sheet.

Now, it's not very clear from some reviews on the net, but the stones included are unfinished rectangular blocks - *you* have to shape and paint them (the reviewer below who seems to suggest that the stones only need gluing to the base has missed something, I think!) You then glue them to the card base. After this, you put glue over the rest of the base and sprinkle the "grass" fluff stuff over that. As others have mentioned, the grass/fluff is in short supply and I am pretty sure there isn't enough included. A similar material is probably available from model shops but make sure you don't start with the included stuff and then run out, leaving your Stonehenge with an inexplicable "different colours of grass" boundary across it!

This has to be the best subject that I have ever modeled in 50 years of modelling experience and the end result is truly breathtaking. Construction is straightforward and fairly easy and the instruction sheet is easy to follow. Although the technique of modelling each stone becomes a bit repetitive, the final product is well worth the effort and the inclusion of the 'grass' and 'chalk' material with which to decorate the assembled model is a touch of brilliance when the end product is seen. The finished item is not too big and not too small and makes a really eye-catching object that is easy to display. This kit is a fine manner in which to display a classic piece of British history! In short, I have no real criticism of this model and consider it to be well worth the money I paid for it!

I really like the model, a very true to life miniature, It's not strictly speaking a model kit, because all you have to do is stick the stones to the base, not much model making skills needed. My one criticism is there's not enough grass.
