This is a book to open new debates! The reader is led through the actual landscape of this world renowned monument, into previously unexplored territory - via the author's application of his comprehensive knowledge of ancient cultures and customs, linked with applying the professional eye of the environmental geologist.
Using detailed maps, charts and diagrams, the astronomical data - even to an amateur like myself - shows new detail to wonder at. Yet it is by no means all scientific - he ensures that the reverence and purpose of those ancient people is duly honoured as they deserve - as they developed and adapted the land to reinforce the links between heaven above and the earth beneath.
Read this and ignite (or renew) your interest in the bookcover's beautifully depicted monument.

A difficult book to read. It's badly written and requires a good looking through by an editor. Spelling and grammatical errors abound and he seems to be in such a hurry to write it that he repeats what he has just said in the next paragraph. Or worse, contradicts himself. And the basic premise that the constellations are repeated on the earth's surface just doesn't work: even he admits that the stars' positions have to be revised to make it all fit, and that's after he's invented some ground locations where nothing has yet been found to justify their existence . He wants to explain the presence of the station stones on Stonehenge itself, but all he does is show that they don't make a perfect rectangle, there are no right angles and the sides aren't parallel. I actually bought this book under a misapprehension: I was expecting an exposition of the surface of Stonehenge and what lies beneath ('As above, so below') not another new-age, mystical alignments and ley lines story. Not recommended.

Half expecting the usual "new age" stacking of assumptions, I was pleased when this book quickly turned out to be serious scientific work - yet never dry or boring. As far as I can assess, Paul Burley completely and utterly NAILED the cosmology underlying the Salisbury Plain geometries. I have been deeply interested in this subject for half a lifetime and I was collecting stone artifacts with my father from I could walk. Many a stray thought of "hey, that fits here" has been validated reading this book. Not only did I enjoy the book, I am deeply thankful for it. The journey through the pages is a return to our dignity as a species, a return to the understanding of our place in the Universe, the understanding that once was global, seemingly built into us. As I read it, every line reminds me of other books I read and loved. This book will get a place right next to "Hamlet's Mill" and "The Golden Bough" and it will be on the "can't be loaned out" list.
