Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess and Ben Kingsley star in this thriller based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story 'The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether'. Set in 1899, the film follows medical school graduate Dr. Edward Newgate (Sturgess) as he arrives at Stonehearst Asylum, an institute for the mentally insane. There he meets the leader of the organisation, Dr. Silas Lamb (Kingsley), and one of his patients, Eliza Graves (Beckinsale), who Newgate becomes enamoured with. Shocked by the unconventional methods Lamb uses to treat his patients, Newgate decides to leave the asylum, determined to take Eliza with him. However, he discovers that everything is not as it seems and escaping turns out to be more difficult than he imagined... The film also stars Michael Caine, David Thewlis and Brendan Gleeson.

where madness turns to love and understanding when things go wrong from with in.... such a place
Sorry but no real " bloody separation of heads from body's here or any other type of
gory murderous bloodthirsty sanguinary..
But a film that will grip you from start to finish " Who is mad and who is sane "
Films on the same lines if you like as " Sherlock Homes " or the old " Jack the Ripper " type with no
silly acting... but acting at it's best from some very good actors like Michael Caine...
who stars in this very good film witch must say it all need I say more....
I give this film the thumbs up and Five Gold Stars from me.
I only hope you get to watch it and enjoy it some cold wet evening
as I have done.. twice in one day... and worth every penny
A young doctor arrives at Stonehearst asylum in order to gain clinical experience with the insane. Ben Kinglsey is brilliant in his portrayal of the asylum head doctor. There are some laugh out loud moments as he gives the young doctor the tour of the place, but things very quickly turn sinister as our main protagonist starts to uncover its disturbing secrets.
The twist at the end was incredibly predictable but the others were not.
The story line kept you on the edge of your seat. Even though you know that something just isn't rite. A film with English actors and actresses. A pleasure to watch. And I will do again and again. Tess
