The storyline is not all bad but tortuous lines and poor melodrama combine to make the book borderline unreadable. I bought it based on the author's record, now I will have to make sure I check all of her new books to see if they are of a similiar ilk. Looks like "Murder and Mayhem" is more of the same.
To be fair to the publishers (read the read the technical data at the forefront) it clearly states that this book is published by MIRA (Harlequin - Mills and Boon) under the title of Thief of Hearts.
So what do you expect!!!
But retitling the book Stolen is not a crime (pardon the pun).
However including an endorsement form Harlan Coben ("it's scary how good Tess Gerristsen is ...") is misleading to a point of being deceitful.
It is, at best, a below average story.
Not quite as dire as some claim but not far off.
The problem arises from TG's huge success right now and many authors earlier works are often weaker (e.g. Harlan Coben, Play Dead!!) than later ones - although this is a broad generalisation as there have been works of outstanding cretivilty from first time novelists.
In summary if your expectations are low then you won't be disappointed - You can also read this book in two days max but it's a bit like eating fast food - it might fill a gap but doesn't leave you nourished!!
To avoid confusion in the future, you should note that any books published by Mira are reissues of romantic suspense novels and were first published in the 1990s. The harder hitting serial killer thrillers are published by Bantam/Transworld, and began when we first published THE SURGEON in 2002.
I should add that if you want to talk to Tess about this or other matters, you can do so by contacting her on her website ([...] or via her wonderful blog, or you'll be able to meet her in person when she tours the UK in January 08 with her new thriller, THE BONE GARDEN.
Hope this is helpful!
Selina Walker, publishing director, Transworld.
