This was a great LP at the time of initial release but it's charms have grown even stronger over the years. The music sounds great throughout but the real gems are on the bonus disc, including a track previously unreleased with none other than Keith Christmas on guitar. The track in question, "Hanging Fire" really should have been on the original release, preferably in place of "Wholefood Boogie", which really should have been used only as the 'b' side of a single.
That is my only qualm about the whole LP. This really should be an essential purchase for anyone who enjoys the first three Crimson albums and anyone who believes that they like, or collect, what used to be called 'progressive' rock.
OK, Pete does not have the best voice in rock music but the charms, the melodies, the arrangements and subtelty of the playing make this album a real winner. Still, after all these years. An essential purchase to my mind.

At last a new CD version of this remarkable album. Avoid the Blueprint reissue (Stillusion): The sound is not bad, but the cover reproduction is horrible and the order of the songs is totally changed.

This double cd is beautifully packed with rare pictures, interesting comments, newspaper articles and lyrics. Disc one features the original album with the original order of the songs. Disc two includes early mixes of the same songs in addition to the non-album tracks "Hanging Fire" and "Can You Forgive a Fool".

Peter Sinfield is no Bryan Ferry (by the way he produced the first Roxy album), but his songs are beautiful, the brass arrangements stunning and he even some times gets some help from Greg Lake with the vocals.
The Blueprint reissue had a thin, but dynamic sound. This remastering is losing some details, but it sounds more natural (analog) and is free from disturbing noice (hiss).

I remembered this album with affection but wondered that after a long period I would find it dated and even the good tracks marred by disappointing vocals or arrangements. On returning to it I have been pleasantly surprised. The songs are mainly quite strong, with everything from the charming understated accompaniment and delicate flute of Under the Sky through to the crashing, discordant and very evocative brass of Night People. It has aged remarkably well although is very recognisable as being of its time. There are a couple of rather poor tracks but the other seven songs contain as many fresh sounding ideas as the entirety of the top 50 or even an average day on Radio 6. The poetry is sometimes wonderful if a little whimsical but it is neither naïve or bombastic. Surprisingly this is an album of powerful moods and thoughts, disguised by a veneer of rural other-worldliness.

Historically, it is interesting to recall just how high were the ambitions of so many rock musicians at the time this album appeared. Many were not content to pump out 10 tracks in 4/4 time, based on the predictable format of verse-chorus, recounting loves found and lost, and two-dimensional observations of the blindingly obvious. The aspirations were not always fulfilled and often resulted in musical train-wrecks, but others were realised in style. The technology, in today’s terms, was limited and so albums had to rely on the ideas represented by the music and words and not the gimmicks. I am bound to say that even if Pete Sinfield was not a great singer this is an album in which he and his fellow players produce some distinctive and exquisite music. I have no regrets at going back to it and I have been delighted to find it is so fresh - still.

The expanded version has a second CD of alternative mixes and an extra two tracks. These really add nothing very much and as we now know, the best had already been selected and presented.
