I don't want to be forced to use two, very similar devices to watch content. No-one does. It is also unnecessarily wasteful and bad for our environment.
Unless Amazon and Google start behaving like adults instead of unnecessarily blocking their apps on each others' devices I will probably return this product and go back to watching Amazon prime on my laptop where the audio is so out of sync due to poor optimisation it feels like I'm communicating with Voyager 2. Just because I'm so darn fed up.
The other solution is to buy a smart TV that supports both - my current TV is great, why would I want to change it?
Installation was quick and easy. Just plug the FireTVStick into a HDMI slot on the TV and the Micro USB to the power supply and connect to your WIFI and your ready to steam Movies, Shows, live TV and Netflix. More apps can be installed from the app store or from the built in web browser.
Would highly recommend. It's a much cheaper alternative to SKY, Vergin, BT TV
ME and my son watch the 'Grand Tour' on the quality at 1080 is superb ... ok so we have 300mbs broadband but if you have good enough broadband the quality of the shows easily rivals Sky.
Infact this small stick is much much more responsive than the Virgin media Tivo box and the picture quality is better.
This stick is designed to be always on so is quick to start up and is always ready to turn on those smart switches .
You can put it to 'sleep' however by holding down the home button and selecting 'sleep' on your screen.
We purchased the fire stick as our TV maker decided to remove the YouTube app from the hub so needed a replacement.
The stick and controller work well, although you need to either plug an ugly AC adapter in or purchase an adapter to use the USB port on your TV. We went with the USB adapter.
It is nice to see everything integrated as we have Prime. There are issues though..
The so called ASAP streaming feature that eliminates buffering works very well ie no buffering, however this results in a grainy picture quality that is quite clear to see. The prime app on our TV does buffer, but once complete you get a perfect picture. Update 2018: This fault seems to no longer exist.
The need for an adapter or ugly AC cable hanging from your TV is a bit of a pain and not made clear in any adverts you see for the fire stick.
Speaking of adverts.. you do have adverts even though it is stated you do not get any. You do with the fire stick, they are only Amazon adverts for other programs, but advert none the less! The app on our TV is free from these adverts, care to explain Amazon?
The voice commands are quite cool, but only work within Amazon apps or within the menu. So no searching YouTube or iPlayer by voice.
All in all it's great if you don't have the prime video app on your TV or your TV is not a smart TV.
That all changed with a friend staying over and pulling out his Amazon Fire TV Stick and showing the options available. Within a week we’d bought the Fire TV Stick allowing us to use Amazon (as Prime members) and four months later we were signed up to Netflix.
We have a 10+ year old, basic TV and the Fire TV Stick has transformed this in seconds to a “Smarter” TV. We simply plugged it into an HDMI slot on the side of the TV, plugged it into a power socket connected to our wifi and Amazon Prime and we were off. So simple.
This has given us access to traditional movies and some great online only series such as Stranger Things to watch when and how we want. You’re no longer constrained to a TV schedule, but if you want can spend a weekend on a binge, for example watching all the episode of The Good Place one after the other.
Certainly no way we’ll be paying for Sky Movies any more. We’ll keep the basic subscription and use the money saved to pay for the Amazon Prime and Netflix subscriptions.
