This is a helpful guidebook that is logical, easy-to-follow, and fun to read. Anne O'Connell merged her two areas of expertise (public relations, and writing/promoting books) into a useful 10-step guide that new authors will certainly find useful. She gives straight-up advice like, "Don't peddle garbage," that seems obvious but is a good reminder to all. Most useful is that she clearly lays out how to tailor a pitch, contact the media, and stand out from the crowd. Her advice is contemporary in that it recognizes the value of social media, and points out opportunities that didn't previously exist for authors to market themselves. While the process can seem overwhelming to the newbie, O'Connell breaks it down and celebrates the fun and adventure in publishing and promoting your book, too. Ultimately I found her writing very human and accessible, and though I read this in its entirety in one sitting it is something I'll dip back into in the future when I have my own materials to promote.

I think the high value of this book is the foundation of "old fashioned" PR advise. I have been building a small library of self publishing books to include several on pr. All the others focus on social media and other digital world information. That is fine and fits much of what is happening today. This book, walks on both paths, in addition to discussing the digital world of social media etc, it includes the traditional face to face, live phone calls, meetings and agendas, how to get on local TV and live radio and be the go to person at the local newspaper.

This sector of pr is completely overlooked in the digital focused literature and can give you the edge over those who spend hour after hour on their Facebook and twitter accounts but miss the opportunity of "old fashioned" success.

As a PR professional, I find this guide to be easy to read, detailed and fun. It is a great option for students and as a refresher for communications managers as to how simple and effective a PR campaign can be if you are organised and prepared. Well done and I plan to recommend it to others.
