The book's title metaphor of stepping stones in the mist is very helpful to me. In a mist, you can only see one stepping stone at a time. You can't see the next step until you've taken this step. I imagine I'm not the only one who isn't completely clear about the purpose and meaning of my life. Miguel's metaphor makes it clear and OK for me to take action in what seems like the right direction, trusting that the next piece of the path will appear. My fearful, rational self tends not to want to do anything unless a final outcome is clear and I've checked it's all safe with no possibility of failure. Miguel's alternative comes with the added bonus of "look, it's worked so well for Miguel!"
It is very, very rare to read a biography that is so full of human truth. The author doesn't hide his faults or his failures, and nor does he fail to acknowledge his own achievements and successes. In doing so he has written a very human book that will resonate with a great many people.
To learn that Miguel suffered the loss of his Mother at a young age, made sense to me that he took up life travelling. Many people suffer adversity, many suffer loss, the path is a wretched one, often left so weak and without hope.
Miguel changes all that, he offers a path through adversity, a way of changing your life, seeing what matters, seeing how life matters.
At the end of each chapter he gives a list of life lessons - real gems of wisdom.
In essence this book offers encouragement, a hand held out, a chance to connect and review your own life path.
Well done Miguel
He begins with the loss of his mother when he was five, and the parenting from people who did their best into his teen years. A theme of vulnerability "In Sunderland. I began to learn about a deep human need for belonging." (p26)runs through the autobiography, juxtaposed with Miguel's courage to face his demons "The more I reveal all of who I am, the more the shadows disappear and I become increasingly more at peace with myself." (p102).
Each of the eight chapters is supported with a Lessons for Life section, which makes it an inspiring read for educators, mental health and other professionals who can interpret specific lessons for students, clients or for themselves. "It is invaluable to be open about our own learning journeys and the things we are not good at with those we are seeking to help." (p.136). Miguel exposes a raw and honesty describing how his prior drug addiction left him seriously ill with Hepatitis C, that when appropriately communicated, can be a don't try this at home message to teens.
The language is concrete and the narrative follows a chronology that is an accessible read, adding value to the bookshelves of a variety of community service professionals - and an authentic lesson empowerment.
Miguel's story overtook me, turning page after page, I was spell bound, unable to set it down. An incredible story of one mans journey, taking responsibility of his life, accepting that he wanted to change and then to find a way through the mist that surrounds us all. He moved himself forward determined to action change in his life and therefore those around him. The words have truth, often brutal but brave, bearing his sole in order to make sense. Sense he makes, not just for him but for all of us, my life could not differ more from the challenges Miguel has faced, however the life lessons at the end of each chapter will be a constant source of inspiration for me, so many ring true.
New beginnings - life lesson number 1
People come and go in our lives and their presence always brings a gift or a lesson of some shape or form
Miguel and his book are the gift!
