Product description

Product Description

Coed Records was formed by veteran bandleader/music publisher George Paxton with Marvin Cane in 1958. The years covered here show the fresh, vibrant music produced by a series of groups and solo singers, mostly but not exclusively African-American in origin. The 40 gems on this 2 disc set include the first two major hitmakers The Crests and The Rivieras, along with hits from The Duprees and the Harptones.

Coed Records was known for launching the Crests and the Duprees, so if you're a fan, you won't be disappointed. But I really purchased the CD for a song very hard to find today on CD - Trade Martin "That Stranger Used To Be My Girl." It's from 1962 and hit only No. 28 on the Billboard Top 100 of America. A very very underrated song, which should have peaked into the Top Ten.

Most of what you get out of the Coed label was the beginning of good things to come later in the decade. I can see the influence here of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. The Crests were its most well-known act for launching staples like the title track "Step By Step" and "Sixteen Candles." I especially like their "Six Nights A Week," found on CD 2. Lead singer Johnny Maestro has some solo act tunes (Mr. Happiness is worth listening to).

The Duprees march behind with their '62 cover of "You Belong To Me" (originally done in '52 by Jo Stafford). Next "My Own True Love" and "Take Me As I Am" are more or less the same, but quite good vocal tracks.

The Harptones cut some tracks on Coed; no mayor tunes, however, but "Answer Me, My Love" is quite good. Adam Wade was a member of Coed (fact - he was the first black man to appear on U.S. television). He scored with "Take Good Care of Her" (not found here and don't know why) and "The Writing On The Wall" (found here).

There's even an answer to "Wake Up Little Susie" by the Everly Brothers in "Susie, We Goofed Again!" by Billy Dawn. Pretty good track, found on Cd 1.

You get much of the same with the other tracks here, but it's another fine comp for your collection.

Excellent tracks especially from Adam Wade, The Crests and Johnny Maestro. Releases that were either ignored or suffered from cover versions in the UK
