An Official Specialist Classical Chart No.1 best-seller, Stella di Napoili boasts world premiere recordings and Italianate rarities from the queen of Bel Canto and coloratura. Following the success of her crowd-sourced ‘Best Of’ collection reJoyce and her electrifying Drama Queens album of Baroque arias, Joyce DiDonato returns to her heartland repertoire to celebrate the birth of Bel Canto opera in 19th-century Naples.
On Stella di Napoli (Star of Naples), the American mezzo-soprano’s creamy tone and dramatic prowess breathe new life into little-known arias by Mercadante, Michele Carafa (a student of Cherubini and close friend of Rossini), Carlo Valentini and the prolific opera composer Giovanni Pacini, whose Stella di Napoli (1845) gives the album its title. Joyce worked closely with Italian conductor Riccardo Minasi (whose previous projects include Bellini’s Norma with Cecilia Bartoli) to bring three unjustly neglected arias to light in new editions and world premiere recordings.
Alongside these little-known gems, Joyce presents a sumptuous Bel Canto banquet with music by the three greats — Bellini, Rossini and Donizetti — including the latter’s Maria Stuarda: a tour-de-force signature role for Joyce, recently screened in cinemas and released on DVD from the New York Metropolitan Opera.

What an immense surpise to listen to such a magnifcant voice. It reminds you of Marilyn Horne in her prime, but then again it is quite different. As the other reviewer has mentioned, the Bel Canto is truly what it should be, the legato, the colarutura, and phrasing is just excellent. This is a voice that is truly in its prime, and very beautiful.
When you listen to her in the Comte Ory (DVD), it is very remarkable, but now she has truly matured.
I have this CD playing constantly in the car at present, and it is just astounding at high volume.
The interpretation of the Bellini (Capuleti and Adelson) are so controlled and melodramatic, truly bringing out the style of Bellini.
Her interpretation of Maria Stuarda is magnificant, I have the DVD and it is as good as Janet Baker's, if not better. But is that due to technology improvements? - I can not tell. Certainly the drama is great.
However my favourite must be her rendition of Donizetti's Elisabetta al Castella di Kenilworth. It is so sweet, but then again so lyric, and then again so strong at times. Listen and you will see what I mean. I would enjoy a full recording of this to be sure.
This must be one of the best aria CD's released in a long time, you really must buy it - worth every penny.
As for the choice of music, most tracks I haven't come across before, and like other reviewers, I'd love to see full recordings (particularly of the Donizetti items).
If you are reading this and are hesitating about buying this album - JUST DO IT! Its totally sublime.
Buy this you won't be disappointed.
If you've enjoyed this and want more try "Bravura Diva" with Jennifer Larmore.
It's worth it for the duet from Andronico
