I've given this 3 stars due to the fact that I found it a bit of a mish mash as I had to go back and check previous paragraphs to make sense of some things and how they fitted in. Having visited the Merville Battery the book has opened my eyes and clarified some information....... Although I found some information confusing. I would however, still recommend this book as it's a good reference as to what happened at Merville.

Once I began reading Steiner's War I could not put it down. It tells how a young officer was left alone at Merville Battery to command a small battalion of German troops [the only ones in the right place] when the allies invaded on D-Day. I have never been a fan of war stories as a genre but as a lover of memoir and recent history I found Steiner's War fascinating. As the reviewer above said, it is unusual to find books that show the events of WWII from the non-allied side and from an especially human perspective. This is not so much a war story as a personal story, which is told without nationalism and with great sensitivity by the author/editor Mike Strong. The English author/editor knew Professor Raimund Steiner personally as a friend and colleague through many years working together at the war museum in Merville, Normandy for many years. Through his involvement with the museum, the author is in a excellent position not only to research the facts but also to meet many of the people who were there. The story is told in the same way that my late father used to talk about what he did during the war. If you are too young to have had a father who served in the war, you are in for a treat. You will also enjoy Sid's War also written/edited with beautiful sensitivity by Michael Strong, which tells the English/Cockney version of the same battle.

The author presents letters and comments plus the results of his own interviews from the German soldiers manning this gun battery at the time of D-Day. These are fascinating but the presentation feels more like the author's notes in preparation for a book than a finished book.Whilst I know that the book is devoted to illuminating "the other side of the hill," I recalled having read about the Allied attack on the battery but couldn't recall the detail. Thus, I would have appreciated an account that interwove both sides' versions of what happened.
Older readers should look out for mention of Jimmy Edwards, the future comedian.
The German Army's reliance on horses to pull a lot of their artillery is in stark contrast to their blitzkrieg image.
The Steiners were anti Nazi in a post-Anschluss Austria and his father was sent to Dachau.

This is an excellent historic recounting of just a short period in time but describes very well how intense things got at that time,I am glad this record was set down before the gallant survivors passed on. Would recommend to all an enlightening read

Slight but worth it. Always valuable to read about major events viewed from 'the other side' or indeed from non-traditional sources i.e. professional historians, politicians or generals.
