Cubasis 2.0 introduces a surprisingly powerful collection of audio and MIDI processing tools for entry-level recording, editing, mixing and CD mastering. The home studio program offers 24 channels of audio and 64 MIDI tracks, editable in a somewhat plain, though easily navigable interface.
Users perform MIDI recording and detailed editing from one of three editors: a key editor with a piano roll-style view; a list editor that stacks all events in a single window; and a score editor, useful when reading, writing and printing scores. A Universal Sound Module provides control over MIDI functions, packing 70 MB of sampled waveforms, four stereo outputs and 16 channel playback.
Audio recording from a microphone or other sound source is accomplished from within the main interface, though editing is handled by the included WaveLab Lite (emphasis on the lite) or an external editor (highly recommended) such as SoundForge. Steinberg provides a good variety of real-time effects, including reverb, echo, chorus, panning and stereo enhancements, among others. Each effect is applied via a pop-up rack component-style window with a variety of adjustments for fine-tuning.
In addition to the impressive features found in the main program, Cubasis 2.0 includes a bonus CD filled with samples and songs, a great way to get up to speed with digital editing. The Steinberg InWire feature allows users to meet and collaborate with others over the Web. Before long, you'll have enough material to use the convenient CD burning feature, the next step for sharing creations with family and friends. --Eric Twelker, Amazon.com
