Review
"The best book on writing that I have read . . . The tips, shortcuts, and plentiful examples of good writing versus bad cannot fail to every writer, no matter at what stage he finds himself." --Barnaby Conrad, author of Matador and Learning to Write Fiction from the Masters
"Stimulating . . . Offers a banquet of savvy advice. Unlike Anne Lamott, et al., Stein aims not to help his readers wrestle with writerly anguish; rather, he gets on the page, citing examples from writers famous and fledgling, closely analyzing first sentences, creation of character, plotting, and dialogue . . . Stein concentrates more on fiction--point of view and the creation of love scenes--but his advice on such issues as self-editing and choosing a title applies also to nonfiction. A section on nonfiction contains worthy remarks about adapting fictional techniques (suspense, visual particularity, etc.)." --Publishers Weekly
"This book can jump-start anyone's creativity. Highly recommended for all writing collections." --Library Journal
"My publisher Sol Stein was my producer, and editor Sol Stein was my director. Stein saw what I didn't think possible." --Elia Kazan
"[Stein] went over my manuscript with an ifallible eye for the soft spots in my prose, giving me one of the best editorial readinds I've ever had." --Lionel Trilling

This is not a book about grammar but about style and making an emotional impact with the reader. It makes you reconsider every word you wrote and motivates you to make it sparkle.
I've read many books on writing, but if I could keep just one, this would be it.
I particularly like the chapter that covers the differences between literary fiction and commercial reads. I also like the fact that he gives suggestions and then an example, allowing you to see the effects of his techniques.
Because I believe in the Pullman dictum that you write books by 'not doing stuff like this', I'll write my review just in bullets:
POSITIVE
Stein provides a very handy and robust set of principles of writing fiction and non-fiction, and these can be easily contextualised within your own work;
It's fairly easy to read and enjoyable, though unpleasantly self-assured in places (one tip I would add on top of Stein's: be aware and control your tone);
One big plus for me was that it occupies a niche in the breadth and even-handiness of the advice, whereas a lot of other books are written very much particular to that author;
NEGATIVE
I've seen in other reviews what I felt, was that the examples are poorly chosen, and often his students or collegues. It detracts from the credibility of the book, as a teacher really should teach from the masters, not from that one good sentence his student wrote, that one time;
Also to do with the examples provided in the book: Stein has a broad view of good writing, but misses a lot of cases of bad writing. Cliches and sentimenality writing are two things he seems to have no problem;
Despite the many, many references to Stein's career and distinguished coterie, Stein lacks credibility, having not written a book of note. This doesn't stop his advice from being good, but it leaves the reader asking: "What is important to the art of fiction he missed?" More esoteric books like Forster's are more explorative of what novel-writing really is I feel.
I would definitely recommend this book to a new writer, and agree with my friend: I benefited enormously from beginning to think critically of structure, pace etc. It is certainly a complement to the variety of approaches writers take to teacher those of us new to the craft about writing.
