TOP 100 REVIEWERon 16 June 2015
This review is about the CINEMA RESERVE 2 disc dvd release. This is the best version of this brilliant film, its in Full Screen and the sound is in 5.1, and the picture plus sound is very nice, it comes with loads of special features, plus a nice booklet, this is ten times better than the average blu-ray release.

The Day the Earth Stood Still is the best ever sci-fi film ever made, plus its way a head of its time. What I love about this film is, it has a massage for mankind, keep care of your fragile planet or we will take action. I know this sounds stupid but in away this is what this planet needs, a wake up call. This is a brilliant film, you could say a masterpiece.

Dating myself now but I saw this at the movies with my older brother when it first came out ... about 1952 I think!! After all these years it still rates as one of my top sci fi movies. Dated by today's standards but in my opinion far surpasses the remake starring Keanu Reeves and the main reason for this being there has never been anything in any future sci movies that can hold a candle to Gort. He was a masterpiece never to have been reproduced. Although in black and white I can still watch this movie over and over again and feel the same thrill I felt when, as a small child, I sat transfixed to the screen when Gort first appeared with such presence.... although I do admit to still having a little 'thing' for Michael Rennie as Klaatu the alien who came to earth to warn us of the dangers of self-annihilation if we continue with our need to constantly be at war with each other. A message that has not been heeded 60 years later. Everyone who loves this movie will never forget the command for Gort should he be in need of his help ..... "Klaatu barada nikto".

SF often doesn't age well, given how heavily it normally relies on SFX & cod-science explanations, which generally date quite quickly. On the other hand, unlike a lot of SF, what matters here is not the SFX, but the story. The SFX are actually quite low key, at least by modern standards, and the how & wherefores are, wisely, barely touched on. The SFX also remain, by modern standards, surprisingly good. I can only imagine how impressive they were on release.

But the star here is not the SFX, nor the actors; it's the story. Yes, there's an unsubtle message (moral, if you prefer). But the way in which it is handled, the performances given by the actors, the direction, the score, and yes, the SFX, all overwhelm any clumsiness. This is classic SF. From the period, perhaps only Forbidden Planet can match it. B-movie it certainly is not. This not only stands the test of time now, I think it will do so for decades to come...

Great movie way better in my estimation than the remake with Keanu Reeves it's a better story line more content and pretty well acted and the special effects while dated are still very advanced for it's time where as the remake was poor and the whole movie revolves around it's special effects in the original version the robot has a part to play in the remake it may well not have been there at all

I first saw this movie in the 1950's it has worn amazingly well and has more impact than the modern version that tries to be too clever and changes the characters and the plot

day the earth stood still dvd is good quality - sound on whole film is very very low - sound is terrible quality -
normal sound volume on tv playback is 20 but to hear this film properly sound volume on tv has to be 60 -
highly disappointed with this dvd - film is restored for quality - sound is not restored - in this day and age the sound should be good quality so you can hear it
