Autobiographical filmmaker Caveh Zahedi has made a cult career of his unabashed willingness to be vulnerable on camera. I AM A SEX ADDICT, a comic reconstruction of his ten-year struggle with sex addiction, is one of his most ambitious, hilarious confessions yet. Just moments before his third wedding, Zahedi relates with utter sincerity and astonishing candor his obsession with prostitutes. He retraces his romantic and sexual history, including his ideological commitment to open relationships, that led to two disastrous marriages and several very pissed off ex-girlfriends. Featuring animation by Bob Sabiston (WAKING LIFE), and a rare dramatic performance by legendary French porn star Rebecca Lord, I AM A SEX ADDICT is Zahedi's unique brand of comedy at its confessional best.

The film makes no erotic impact at all, as the director takes the viewer to more bizarre locations in different brothels across different Europe countries and in the US. The film maker manages the multi-lingual ability of saying 'do you suck?' in many different languages. After a while I began to hate Zahedi's self indulgent whine to different girlfriends 'honey you know I like prostitutes' and began to detest the man and have huge amounts of sympathy with his much abused wives and girlfriends.
Only a few of things I can say in the films defence; at it's best it was a confessional account of the director's sexual misdemeanours similar to Sean Thomas' book 'Millions of Women Waiting to Meet You', it also put me off ever contemplating using prostitutes and if we can believe the director he did come out of his addiction a new reformed character. Then again can we believe the director ? I'll let you decide.
I had no idea what the film was about, but by the look of the cover it appeared to look like some kind of sleazy sex comedy.
How wrong i was, and i think this is problem with the film, because alot of people are expecting this sort of soft porn comedy and it must seem like a big let down to them.
Not to me, i thought the film was wonderful, and truly original. Its not often you see someone put out their whole life like this on film. Especially when you take into account what he is actually telling you. It must be a very hard thing to admit this to yourself, never mind putting it into a movie.
I really didnt want this film to stop, thats how good i thought it was. I am a big fan of the documentary style film, but this in my opinion rates even higher than The Devil And Daniel Johnston, and i am a big Dan Johnston fan, so it gives you an idea just how much i like this movie.
Its really well done, and very humorous aswell, but the main thing is this guy actually shows you how he felt, and how his problem affected each one of his different relationships. I have known people throughout my life with various different addictions and the thing i relate to about this film is the way Cavey puts it forward. Hes not saying " hey im a sex addict, feel sorry me!! " . Hes showing you how he became this way, and how he tried to redemy his affliction, and also how each one of his different partners reacted to his problem. I really have to admire the guy's honesty throughout all his relationships.
The subject matter here is a very dark one indeed, but the whole film feels so light hearted in a sense, but at the same time very serious, it really is a well put together movie.
This film is about the best surprise i have had all year, and i would strongly recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in addicitons or different people in general.
