Review

Something of a visual feast for the modeller... the unpublished photographic material means this book merits serious consideration. --AFV Modeller UK

This is a cracking book that s well work taking a look at and is beautifully presented in hardback form with large photos throughout that do the subject full justice. --Military Machines International

…good review of the start and turn of events of the war in the East and makes it very readable to all. --In Scale

Plenty of photos are well-known, none are rare. The quality of their reproduction is found wanting, to say the least.

Captions are poor when not entirely wrong when not plain and dull.

Mr I.Baxter's mediocrity is as constant as its litany of botched up books.

As a hobbyist and general reader of all ww2 history books i found this book very good and am pleased with all of Ian Baxters books so far, how ever some do have some repeats of pictures, tho i find sometimes with the topic the rare avaliability of pictures is to blame.

however, for this particular title, some great pictures inside some i have not seen before.. which is always nice.

lovely book in hard back. will be looking to obtain the rest.

would recommend

1.0 out of 5 stars Steel Bulwark:The Last Years of the German Panzerwaffe on the Easter Front 1943-45 16 May 2010
By William L. Robinson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Helion and Company should be ashamed of this book. The quality of the printing has plummeted, poor quality paper and poor quality reproductions of the photographs. A waste of money for the consumer. I have purchased other books by this publisher and the quality of the printing has been excellent. This was a major disappointment. I would expect this kind of quality in a cheap pulp paperback.

Ian Baxter must also be taken to task for his misrepresentations. I don't know what he pays his photo researchers but it is either too much or too little. If he pays them well, then he pays way too much. If he pays too little, then he is getting what he deserves. His work has gotten worse as time goes on. The majority of the photos are hardly rare and unpublished, they are the same old retreads. The captions are hardly "in-depth" when the captions are inaccurate or just wrong. I have removed his other two recent works from my wish list and I would advise any interested party to avoid any of his books. There are better values to be had. Two examples of great values are the Concord Publications "Armor at War Series" and Lee Archer and William Auerbach's Panzerwrecks series (10 volumes).

It is a shame that there is no rating below 1 star, because this book deserves it. I feel that I wasted my money on this book. The title was interesting. In the past, if I got a small number of pictures that I hadn't seen before, the quality of the printing made the purchase worthwhile. Now when you combine very poor research with horrible printing, it is not worth half the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice mix of photos 17 May 2010
By B. Fairbank - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is of a similar format to Ian Baxter's other books, so if you are familiar with them you'll find pictures of German artillery, armour, troops, weaponry - some clear images, some less so. Considering the dearth of good quality images available for the late war period this is a good attempt with some very interesting images mixed in. Is it groundbreaking - no? But if you're looking for an affordable primer then this fits the bill nicely. I must take issue with another reviewer on Amazon of this book - this paper is matt, it's not glossy but that doesn't mean it's poor quality - it feels a bit more 'substantial' than cheap gloss. Whilst some of the images are fuzzy it looks to me that's due to the original images themselves and nothing to do with the print quality as some clearer images are printed perfectly.
