Have you ever wondered if there are parallel dimensions where magic exists and people can travel from one world to the next with a simple portal? If you could what would happen? What could possibly go wrong with this? Alex Vick answers these questions in her book Stealing Magic. A quick read that pulls the reader into an adventure of mischief and saving two worlds. The book is told from the third person perspective so you get to hear the thoughts of all the characters. The three main characters are Shannon, from Terra (Earth), and Jax and Darius from Androva. They all meet when Jax and Darius travel through a portal from Androva to Terra to harvest magic from the trees that grow there. Shannon sees them and sees them using magic. It is then that she discovers she also has magical abilities. Shannon seeing the boys and discovering she can use magic causes an irreversible change that effects both their worlds and leads to great changes for the inhabitants of Androva.

Terra is your typical modern day Earth environment, teenagers complaining about school, cell phones, internet and day to day mundane activities. Androva is a world where magic is incorporated into daily life, however their world does not have great trees like Terra, and that is where the living magic comes from. Androva is also governed by very strict laws they call The Code. This is the law that all citizens must adhere to and live by in order to keep the balance of the Treaty in place. Jax is your typical rebellious teen that wants to prove he is the best at magic and knows better than the “stupid rules” that are in place to keep him from learning more. Darius is his best friend and loyal to a fault, he will gladly take the blame for Jax when he can for no other reason that he wants to protect him.

Magic, mystery and a little bit of mayhem lie at the heart of this fun, middle grade adventure. Shannon is an ordinary Earth girl who loves to read and who wakes up one lazy afternoon to overhear two alien boys stealing magic from her garden. It’s a tale full of the wonders of magic, and the problems that follow when people break the rules. It’s also about loyalty and friendship and taking chances if that’s what it takes to save the world.

Shannon may seem ordinary, but she’s full of potential, while Jax is already the most promising magic user of his age. Which has made him a little bit arrogant and over-confident, not to mention determined to break the silly rules that no one will bother explaining to him.

To be honest, it seemed a bit daft that no one on Androva could learn the truth about those rules before they turned eighteen. Especially when it’s young teens who are the best at gathering magic from Terra. It’s not surprising that Jax is rebelling against them, since they make no sense to him. The only surprise is that he’s the first.

Still, it does leave everything open to discovery and wonder as Shannon and Jax become firm friends, and along with another boy, Darius, they set about uncovering the secrets and trying to fix any mistakes they may have made in breaking the rules. There’s trouble aplenty heading their way, thanks to some unpleasant adults and of course the big bad that lurks behind all the rules.

With likeable characters and an interesting plot, this is a highly enjoyable read, particularly for tweens. It has adventure, discovery, excitement, danger, friendship, a tiny touch of romance and plenty of magic. In all this is a good start to the series and leaves you wondering just where it will head next.

A very well written and interesting tale of two worlds - "magic" and "normality" - with adventure and the importance of friendship.
The two worlds join together to confront and defeat evil.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the Legacy of Androva

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hungry Monster Book Review 17 Dec. 2016

When Jax broke several of the laws in The Code, a chain reaction of events starts taking place. In an attempt to reverse these events Jax brings Shannon through the portal into Androva and starts teaching her how to use her magic. It turns out she is stronger than anyone suspected and learns quickly. The three friends now put into place a plan to find out how to fix things, however they soon discover they cannot change what has already started.

Some of the key themes in this book are loyally, family bonds, trust and letting go of the past. All these topics come up in Stealing Magic, as well as the lesson of doing things for the greater good not self-advancement. Given the reading level of the book I think it handles these difficult subjects well and gives good examples of self-sacrifice and showing how hard change can be. Vick has managed to provide a diverse set of characters to love and hate and even the ones that are hated are still very relatable, Marcus being a key example. Marcus is the bully that wants to control people but his passion is strong and while his methods are questionable, his desire to protect his world is genuine.

Overall Stealing Magic is a good book and great start to the Legacy of Androva Series. I look forward to reading more about the adventures of Shannon, Jax and Darius as they grow from teens into powerful magicians. There is a lot left for Alex Vick to cover in this series as the first book just gives you a taste of the world of Androva and its connection with Terra.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a series. 15 Mar. 2017

Book Review- Stealing Magic by Alex C. Vick

Jax and Darius are harvesting magic like they are supposed to do, but they are doing it during the day which is against the rules. Another rule is broken when Shannon hears them. After that moment her life is forever changed. She learns of another world, magic and her own abilities.
Jax and Darius take Shannon to their world to figure out what is going wrong. Something has changed. They need to figure out what is really going on and why. A great evil is threatening Androva and a prophesy has been revealed. Jax and Shannon play a big part in saving Androva. The council refuses to believe two children will stop what is coming. Jax and Shannon have to fight against the rules and the council to do what they have to do.
This was a unique storyline. I like the idea of the two worlds and how a treaty was enacted. Magic staying only on one world and the other with knowledge. Of course the secret will get out and leave it to thirteen year olds to do it. Jax and Darius are great friends. Jax being pretty fearless with Darius along for the ride. Jax pushing against the boundaries and rules set forth. Definite typical teenage behavior rules this story with some magic thrown in.
I like how the author shows the adults underestimating the teens. They appear just as capable in what they are doing. It is suspenseful with the fear they have of getting caught. They make a good team of characters. Jax and Shannon are cute. It’s a pretty good read for the preteen, early teen reader. I give it a 4 out of 5.
5.0 out of 5 stars Harvesting Magic...Lots of Secrets... 18 Feb. 2017
By Nancy Allen (The Avid Reader) - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
Jax and Darius live in world with magic and are sent out nightly along with other teens from their world to Terra, Earth to harvest the magic from the trees. While they are on Terra one night harvesting the magic they spot a girl about their age asleep in the garden behind her home. Darius being the one that likes to follow the rules informs Jax they have to leave before this girl wakes up and sees them.

Now the reason they go to Terra at night to harvest the magic is because no one on Earth is supposed to see them if anyone does there will be terrible consequences to face. But before they can make it back to their world through the portal the girl Shannon wakes and sees them.

Jax being your typical teenager who is very mischievous does not take to well to following all the rules and likes to do his own thing. Besides the boy has a very inquisitive mind. So therefore asks lots of questions as to why they have to harvest the magic and what the reasons are behind all the rules. Once the boys break the rules and then are caught doing it the boys try to make amends.

I really enjoyed following Jax, Darius, Shannon and all the other characters on their quest of harvesting the magic and finding out all the secrets that the people on Androva have been keeping through the generations. The world building was out of this world magnificent. I can’t wait to read more about Jax, Darius and Shannon and what adventures they will take us on next. If you have not read Stealing Magic then let me suggest that you do well that is if you like reading all things magical.
