If you are already skilled in music but are new to the bodhran, I think this is the dvd for you. For a genuine musical beginner like me, it is not much help at all.

The tutor tells you really basic things such as how to hold the bodhran and how to hold the tipper/beater. He covers simple reel and jig times. All lovely and clear and useful, though I had picked up this level of info from instructional videos on youtube. I was really eager to take the next step - but it seemes like the tutor took a leap rather than a step. He went into complicated beats and time signatures, demonstrated at full speed, rather than slowing down to help the learner pick up on the beat and copy it. There are several opportunities to play along with musicians, but if you aren't already musicial, you may need more advice/explanation than simply "Now remember, listen to the msicians"! I gave it my best shot but ended up feeling bewildered and incompetent.

I'm afraid I'm going back to youtube, where there are videos of people playing the rhythms slowly so that I can listen, copy, practice. When I have done that for a while, and developed my general knowledge and understanding of playing music, I will come back to this dvd and possibly get more benefit from it.

Having had a video tutor on the Bodhran, I needed to update it to DVD. Looking around, there wasn't a great deal of choice and what there was had been criticised by a couple of customers.

I found this to be first class, taking the rank amateur from a sensible starting point [how to hold the instrument], through to playing with the band. The presenter obviously knows his stuff and explains it all very well. You'll even be able to recognise whether you're listening to a jig or a reel!

All in all a very good DVD at a good price. You'll not be disappointed.

I purchased this DVD for my father who has recently acquired a bodhran to add to his growing arsenal of percussion instruments. I use a lot of ethnic percussion on my own recordings and I look forward to utilising the bodhran for my next album, once I have mastered the basics! This DVD is very similar in style and presentation to other instructional DVDs with the added advantage that Steafan actually looks like he is enjoying himself while he goes about showing us the rudiments of this versatile instrument. The presentation is not patronising like some instructional DVDs can tend to be and I have found the whole package to be pleasingly worth the price-tag, being a few quid cheaper than those found in drum shops!

All in all, a very good buy - go on treat yourself to very rewarding past-time!

I got this to get me started on learning Irish drumming...and I was not disappointed.

Stefan Hannigan is a good teacher with a straightforward delivery and easy methods.

The Playalong section is really helpful to learn to play along with a good Irish traditional band. The musicians are good and the tunes are a grand example of Irish jigs, hornpipes, and reels.

Thanks, Stefan for a great set of lessons.

Good value for money...!

I bought a bodhran on holiday on a whim and thought i'd give it a try. This dvd made it seem easy to learn with clear instructions and good clear pictures. Not going to change my career to drummer yet but maybe next month

As a complete beginner (although a musician) to playing the bodhran, I hoped to be introduced to simple rhythmic skills and then gradually progress to use of both ends of the tipper and be instructed in how to use wrist action to achieve different patterns. Unfortunately this starts well, but then focuses on listening to an expert play and advised to join in - well I can't because I don't know the skills to play complicated rhythmic patterns. Consequently I felt demoralised and gave up.

Whilst I'm not a complete beginner with the Bodhran, I found this DVD both informative and useful. Stefan Hannigan is clearly an expert player and his instruction and tips are both useful and helpful. I would recommend this DVD.
