I read this charming novel about small village life in Spain in two sittings. Jack Birtwell is a fit 60 year old, still working as a builder but finding work harder to come by as he approaches retirement. He is not a wealthy man and worries about how he is going to fund his retirement, desperate to avoid returning to England after 35 years. He is a cultural and independent man who, when not working on building jobs with his fellow ex-pat Partner, spends his time tending to growing his crops, reading widely and occasionally visiting the Village's hostelries, though he tends to mind his own business and intentionally doesn't get too engrossed in the gossip of village life. He has been single for many years and accepts that he will probably spend his remaining years as a Bachelor. And so his days have passed for many years until one day his Employer and Business Partner informs him that he no longer can guarantee the amount of work Jack had begun to rely upon to make ends meet. Talking his options over with a couple of close Spanish friends, Jack settles on a course of action that may secure his future but has the potential to upset some of his neighbours and will certainly mean, at least for a while, a sudden end to his quiet existence. Someone looking for a fast paced thriller should perhaps look elsewhere but such an enjoyable and absorbing story I have not read in a long time.

Really enjoyed this book, simple but heart-warming story, well written, likeable main character. Story line as such is probably a bit weak and predictable, but that does not detract from the enjoyment in this particular case, its not a whodunnit but an easy read that will put a smile on your face. Only criticism - the ending was a bit sudden.

I loved this book, found it very entertaining and well written. The fact that it was written as a novel and in the third person made it a refreshing change from the usual ex-pat memoirs and definitely a class above the run of the mill of this genre.
I now want to read something else by this author soon.

I felt myself fit into Jack's boots whilst reading this short novel ... my likes and dislikes match so closely. So I was locked into the story immediately and just wanted to read more and more. The ending is too abrupt for me - it just needs a few extra pages to wind it down. I reckon it has some more mileage for a follow on story.

Great characters. You really want Jack to succeed as he battles to keep his Spanish dream alive against all the odds.

Really good insight into the Spanish expat life and relations between the local community. It doesn't always make you proud to be British.

Strongly recommend reading.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - very engrossing and relaxing to read. I loved the character of Jack and enjoyed sharing his experiences at this retrospective point in his life. You are reminded that the grass always seems greener and just living a simple existence in the moment is not to be sniffed at!

Thought this was a great read! Very different to what I normally go for but the setting, characters and situation got me hooked within the first few pages. Now waiting for the next one from J.J. Birtwell
