Unhelpful and poorly written.
on 26 February 2017
Given that this is supposed to help those of us struggling with the subject purchasing the book has proven to be quite a disappointment. Diagrams are poorly labelled, the language used is confusing and sometimes patronising using circular arguments. One example is the section on sample size and standard error - no labels on the y axis - no mention of the y axis in the text. How am I supposed to know what the numbers represent? If I submitted a graph as part of an undergrad assignment and an axis wasn't labelled I would be marked down. The x axis is a measure of time in minutes - again not labelled as such just as x or x bar.
How about this sentence:
'In general, the mean of this population of all possible sample means is the same as the mean of the entire population.'
I know you can have a mean of a population but can you have a population of sample means?
I'm sorry to say that in my opinion the way this has been written and presented does not help clarify the concepts at all - certainly not for dummies like me!
