Product Description

About the Author

Conrad Carlberg started writing about Excel, and its use in quantitative analysis, before workbooks had worksheets. As a graduate student he had the great good fortune to learn something about statistics from the wonderfully gifted Gene Glass. He remembers much of it and has learned more since–and has exchanged the discriminant function for logistic regression–but it still looks like a rodeo. This is a book he has been wanting to write for years, and he is grateful for the opportunity. He expects to refer to it often while running his statistical consulting business.

This is the first Conrad Carlberg title I've bought, however I'm really impressed with this book - so much so that I've bought the ebook version from Que as well (so I can have the .pdf open alongside Excel on my pc). Much better than the Management Science books I've bought (from the likes of Albright, Winston etc. - although the Winston "Biz Analysis with Excel 2010" is good). This book is much better than the Bill Jelen/John Walkenbach books I've also bought - Jelen is better than Walkenbach but pretty basic (more for Financial Analysts wanting to do month end accruals etc. than business analysts wanting to model complex business problems). Have ordered CC's "Managing Data with Excel" on the rave recommendation of a reviewer so looking forward to getting that!

To give you an example of why I think this book is worth buying, array formulas are frequently referred to by the authors mentioned above - but more in a what they are/do type of way than how to use them. On Day 1 of owning this book, not even having read more than one chapter, I can now use the FREQUENCY function in conjunction with pivot tables/charts to do quick analysis that would take alot more effort with the other books - in a nutshell, this book helps you apply what you learn, not just learn for the sake of it!

I purchased this book as I wanted to understand the various statistical methods to apply. Excel is a very powerful tool and the Analysis Toolpack extends said power. However, when it comes to the Excel help many of the references to the various statistical tools contained within the Analysis Toolpack are vague and unhelpful. This book changes that! I cannot recommend this book enough, it was the best present to myself as it has made my job as a Data Analyst so much easier. Top job Mr Carlberg - keep up the good work.

Having slept through statistics in college I reached a stage where I wanted and needed to learn statistics to aid improved decision making in this new world of big data. While this book is not an a-z excel tutorial in using statistics it provides a good mix of statistical theory and practice using excel. One criticism is that sometimes the author does'nt spend enough time on the interpretation of the results (assumes the reader knows or has enough statistical knowledge to know) and what follow up is required or needed. Overall though an excellent text.
