One of those interlocking story films like 'Crash' that the Americans seem to like nowadays. This one focuses on a part of New York that tends to be overlooked, Staten Island. The three stories include Parmi Tarzano, a small time gangster who wants to make it big until his gang have other ideas. Sully, a sanitation worker who dreams of better things for his baby son and thinks the way to get them is to burgle the house of you know who and Jasper; a deaf mute butcher, who disposes of bodies for the mob but is friends with Sully. The story features the underside of American life and when the stories collide explodes with predictable violence. It features good performances by all concerned and the picture quality of the print is excellent.

A good film and realistic in that no-one comes out of it particularly well. Not sure about message re genetic engineering... or that main motive for conservation to leave lasting legacy (tho don't have problem with that)... Love the twists and turns, and how the story is shown from different perspectives.

Some have called this film a Tarentino-esque celluloid tribute- which , though flattering; is off the mark.
James Demonaco is a director to watch out for , certainly, but his inspirations seem to be more European in influence. With his wonderful eye for the banal and trivial that encompass and capture the local Staten Island characterizations, make this film more like Amelie from the French director, Jean Pierre Jeunet, albeit , slightly more gory. A mysterious storyline keeps the interest and never spoon-feeds the audience with captions to alert you to the time-frame;the director expects your full attention.
D'Onofrio makes a sinister yet, clown-like mobster, with decently acted supporting gangsters.A refreshing turn for Ethan hawke , playing a bit against type and one of his best performances to date.
The scene stealer was the marvelous veteran actor,Seymour Cassel, who plays the most heart-wrenching poignant character- (and a gold star for the casting director)- everything is captured in his expression and those wonderful eyes.I loved the dramatic close-ups Demonaco sprinkled throughout the piece as well as a brilliant editing job.
A thought provoking and well-crafted gem.

This is one of those irritating films where the writer/director(s) clearly think they are being controversial, artistic and really clever. For example, we see the camera placed on the floor and endless footage of one of the main characters half mast trousers and red socks are shown in closeup. Why?
The Director (and writer) James DeMonaco has obviously seen too many Coen Bros films and thinks it is clever to place a camera on the floor for the sake of it.
The story actually starts remarkably well. Then runs out of steam. Why on earth would a mafia crime boss, in the process of torturing the man who hurt his mother - end up standing in a tree protesting at the planned demolishion of the land by a property developer? As comedy, it's not funny, as serious it's just meaningless.
