I don't want to give too much away but this book made me bawl my eyes out which was not what I was expecting at all. I am much more of a thriller/horror/suspenseful kind of girl but this book had me gripped from the start. Ok I get that some people say that it's predictable and yeah I suppose it is but for me that didn't matter it was still a jolt to my heart when I read the unthinkable. I could not read those last couple of chapters quick enough hoping that it wasn't true.
The only negative I would say is that Jo is really really annoying in the first half of the book. She's whiny, irritating, unrealistic, pathetic and overall very hard to relate to BUT don't let that put you off, stick with it you will thank me I promise!
The protagonist 'Jo' is just too Bridget Jones for me, her love interest 'Dean' is yet another brooding Mr Darcy.
The huge coincidence that runs throughout this book is just too........ coincidental, and basically you can see the moment when everyone will land on the same page and understand how their lives have intertwined from very early on in the story.
Adele does have an amazing way with words and true, this may be chicklit, but it's impeccably well written chicklit.
I have read the entire book in 1 week, which is pretty impressive going for me - so something has kept me coming back for more.
And I can definitely say I think the ending was worth all the cheesy cliches.
The State We're In tells the story of four people, a mother and daughter and a father and son. It skips around in time from the eighties to the present day and it becomes clear quite early on where the story is going. I didn't mind that as I was interested in the characters and keen to see how it panned out. I'm not entirely sure I can forgive Parks the end of it though, it seemed like it was done for effect and in an attempt to get the #keepthesecret hashtag trending. I felt that the epilogue was an attempt to appease the reader who might be disappointed but found this contrived and unnecessary. I'll keep the secret out of respect to future readers and the author but can't recommend reading. Disappointing.
That said, I did enjoy this book for what it was and it was a nice break from some of the heavier and more intense books I've been reading.
That was my first book I've read of Adele Parks, it was well written and I will look for other books she's written.
Writing about complicated relationships, and how our lives are so intertwined and complex.
I loved this book and its characters
