All the Housemates series have a charm to them which comes from exploring life as young adults either at university, or just graduated from it, the excitement of independent living, the freedom of exploration, the tentative emotions that come with the first serious "grown up" romance.
This one though has what I suspect is just more than a little bit of Jay himself as it examines the complexities of being a gay trans man finding their feet in the world.
We see Ben learning not only to deal with his own thoughts, anxieties and feelings, but also with adding in a significant other as his relationship with Sid developed.
I loved Ben, I wanted to hug him so badly and tell him how amazing he was to take the steps to being his own true self. But Sid, I fall at the feet of Sid for demonstrating, in his words and actions, how to be the best support for Ben and in taking his time to learn what made his boyfriend comfortable.
I hope people read this, the more diverse books looking at all aspects of the LGBTQ+ world the better. Jay has included a helpful glossary at the beginning of the book with resources on where to find out more information.
But I also hope people read this because it's a beautiful love story about finding your self confidence and living an authentic life in partnership with someone who helps and encourages you to do so. And that applies to people of any sexual orientation, any colour, any race. Love does not discriminate.
Plus amazing cover from the fabulous Garrett Leigh which matches the beauty inside.
P.S. - Jay, we best be getting Johnny and Ryan next ;)
Starting From Scratch is a wonderful, well written book, dealing with issues that could have been cringe-worthy to read if they weren't handled as sensitively as they were. I don't want to repeat the book blurb, but I can't begin to imagine how difficult it would be to be in Ben's shoes and put myself out there to start again. Both Ben and Sid are very likeable characters, although I was concerned that Sid could have taken the potentially hurtful attitude of his house-mate Johnny early in the book, but it didn't happen. They both came over as sensible, practical, grounded individuals. Sid didn't balk at the situation he found himself in with Ben when Ben took the decision to trust him. We also get to see all of the other house-mates from the earlier books too.
All in all, it was another excellent book from Jay. I now find myself with the building blocks to an understanding of something I didn't have before, and a warm, cosy feeling inside from the HEA ending.
I'm a fan of this author and his works, and I've come to equate the name Jay Northcote with a great tale that has a lot of heart, a lot of realism and that ends in the start of a HEA, despite his leads' relatively young ages. Some might think of his books as ending with HFNs, but for me, there's clear commitment and a desire for a shared future in his guys, age be damned. This book, which I'd heard about a while back when JN talked about possible writing plans for 2017, hit me in so many ways - it opened my eyes, educated me, made me think and think some more, made me a little sad, brought out the protective mum in me, touched my heart and made me a lot happy and a lot emotional. I think it's touched me enough to make me a better person for reading it. I hope, and feel, so.
Going into it, I had expected a tale full of emotions, but I hadn't a clue about the potential mix of good/bad/happy/prejudice or not/sad, and I ended up incredibly moved and in a great place. Without Spoiling the tale, I can tell you that there are several examples of amazing love in it, and so, so much happiness, due to both main and side characters, their stances, their acceptance, their decency, their support and love, and their friendship and caring, that I ended up actually crying. I loved Ben, who had such strength of character and who had the support of his nearest and dearest and yet ended up vulnerable and hurting at times, and likely might still for a while to come - he made me want to reach out and hug him so, so hard.Read more ›
I've read all the books in this series and loved every one
I couldn't choose a fave... it was impossible, they are all amazing. But I was wrong, I do have a fave now and its this book
I just knew I would love Ben & Sid's story
What I thought was refreshing about this book was the fact one of the guys is a trans guy... I have only read one other featuring a trans character, so its really nice to see more books like this
Starting From Scratch is Ben & Sid's story
Ben is a trans guy, I absolutely loved reading about him.
His thoughts and feelings were really emotional for me... He is just a guy that was born in the wrong body and he just wants to be seen as "normal"
I was shocked to read/see what a trans guy goes through... and how simple little things we take for granted are really difficult for a trans person
I absolutely loved Sid, He is just your average gay guy... but he is such a sweet, amazing guy
I was in awe of how he dealt with everything and just how accepting he was of Ben, truly amazing... I wish more people were like Sid
I found their story really interesting, emotional and beautiful <3
I just recently found out the author Jay is actually trans and I think with him having the personal experience it made Ben's character feel so damn real, it made his problems, fears...Read more ›
