A big cycling fan I usually enjoy watching the more modern Tour de France and Giro d'Italia coverage that is published for each year's races with Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen's commentary. This coverage of the 1973 Giro however gives a very different slant on a great tour but is still a pleasure to watch. The format is again stage by stage and focuses on the greats of the time - namely the battle between Merckx, Moser, Gimondi and, in the alps, Fuente. However the (English language) commentary is less adreline-filled and instead more artistic bringing home the beauty of the sport. The insights into tactics and the sport itself are also revealing - while cycling may have changed in a lot of ways in the past 3 decades it is also striking how much is the same.

This is of course a film for the cycling fan - I doubt it would be for the casual viewer. However it is said that this is rated as one of the best films about cycle racing ever made and it is clear to see why a film made back in the 1970s still sells today.

The beauty of this film is that it covers so many angles and has a gentle poetic style that makes it a great film regardless of the subject matter. I find I can watch this anytime and it inspires me too. Wonderful breadth of vision.
