Product Description

Formerly a leading light in the critically adored mid-90's London-based band "Jack", Anthony Reynolds evolved his alter-ego as Jacques in 1997, so To Stars is well overdue. Very much in the same campy-pop vein as label-mates the Divine Comedy, the aim of this album was, allegedly, to inject a bit more "fun" into the downbeat musical landscapes Reynolds loves to create. For Reynolds, though, "fun" isn't the same thing as it might be for Steps, the Archies or even Jonathan Richman. In fact, a cover of Abba's "The Day Before You Came" is about as chirpy as it gets. Elsewhere, he's reminiscing about having sex while listening to neighbours fighting, or fretting about how miserable his past has been. Yup, Jacques is adrift in a gloriously self-absorbed world where Jacques Brel and Scott Walker are kings, where smoky late-night MORgrooves are de rigeur, and where the smoke from the Gauloises curls up towards a light bulb with no shade. If that sounds like your thang, dive right in, because almost nobody does it better. --Johnny Black

The latest Jacques album sees Anthony Reynolds' further developing his distinct brand of black humour and orchestral driven indie pop. Similar in style to the Jack debut album ("Pioneer Soundtracks") "To Stars" is quite simply a mesmerisingly beautiful album from start to finish. Reynold's vocals are equisite and recall Brett Anderson at his most operatic. Deep and soothing they amplify the damaged beauty of his lyrical obsessions, namely drink, drugs, sex and the city. Aside from the Divine Comedy no other band at the moment is making such bold, assured, daring and above all grandiose indie. "Blue Party" is an achingly gorgeous tune, the cracked vocals and gently strummed acoustic guitars building into one of the finest recorded moments for Jacques so far. "What You Do To Me" however is the standout track here, an ode to a previous girlfriend tinged with regret and heartbreak but also strangely bitter and defiant. At times it's difficult to see exactly what the difference is between Jack and Jaques. Both appear to adhere to a decadent bohemian like lifestyle and aside from the odd burst of accordion the music is rarely that different. This album is destined to be a hidden gem although it deserves much more, my advice is to buy it now!
