Amazon.co.uk Review

It’s no easy task to create a spin-off series from what became the longest continually-running science fiction show of all time. And when Stargate Atlantis spun out of Stargate SG-1, few could have expected it to have turned out quite as well as this.

Stargate Atlantis’s origins inevitably lie in SG-1, specifically the ongoing storyline in the original show to find Atlantis. And thus, from a story-telling perspective, some of the groundwork was already done. Still, it takes a little while for the show to find its stride, although it’s soon helped by the appearance of some familiar faces from the earlier show.

Yet from the midst of a base in Atlantis, the show soon warms to its task. It’s a dangerous place to be, courtesy of the fractions within the crew, and also the constant, and at times devastating, alien threat. Furthermore, there are plenty of fine ideas, and many examples of sharp writing, at the heart of Stargate Atlantis, and particularly as the show hits its later seasons, there are an increasingly number of terrific and very memorable moments.

The boxset delivers five seasons of the show, and eventually starts taking the whole Stargate franchise off in a different direction to usual. And that’s a good thing. For once it discovers its identity and place in the world, Stargate Atlantis is a quietly impressive science fiction series, with some genuinely engrossing episodes. Warmly recommended. --Jon Foster

Every Atlantis Fan's Must Have...
I'm not going to go into some fake, magazine-style review of the series, cut and paste plot descriptions or critically debate and compare it to every other Sci-Fi show in existence. I'm simply going to say this...Atlantis is by far one of my favourite TV shows of all time, and when I realised it was available on Bluray I simply couldn't resist. The quality of the up scaling is fantastic, any long running fans of the show will be able to see the quality difference immediately. I will say, however, that there are some shots that have a slightly less crisp quality to them but these are very few and far between, and negligible in number compared to the overall show length. The special features are also not in High Definition, however, that said the episode quality is still excellent and alone is worth the price you pay.Someone asked on one of the other reviews what languages it comes in, as far as I can tell from the information on the box it's English only, and there is no language selection screen either. But I'm English so it doesn't really impact me anyway!Like the title says, if you're a fan of Stargate then there is simply no reason for you not to own this. Also with the rarity of the original DVD seasons nowadays, this is one of the more attractive buying options for all 100 episodes. For example, when I looked in a particular UK high street retailer, the Season One DVD set was priced at £70, which was crazy; It has now since disappeared from their shelves, at least where I live.As for the Amazon pricing, all 100 episodes on DVD cost about £78, (I bought for this for £90) if you have a Bluray player £12 difference for High Definition is worth every penny! But, I digress...Awesome Show, Fantastic Quality, Great product and one extremely happy fan!

Already had this series on DVD so upgraded to blu ray to see how the quality improves over the five seasons of this show that was cut down in it's prime to be booted of air by network who didn't want to spend anymore money on it.

Instead of giving us season 6 we were given Stargate Universe which I didn't like on first airing.

Haven't checked the discs yet but at least I have watched the show which was fabulous and gave the world an little unknown actor called Jason Mamoa.

I bought this mainly as collector and will probably never open it. This reminds me hours of great time spend with Stargate. Every Stargate series is great but for me this one is the TOP. Very nicely packed and all in one place.

In a galaxy far, far away, an expedition from Stargate Command fights the good fight against the predatory Wraith and sundry other baddies. As in the best Star Trek shows, an unpredictable mixture of action, adventure, suspense, comedy and romance draws on the diverse talents of a likeable ensemble cast.

First among equals is David Hewlett's vain, timid, irritable, hypochondriacal super-scientist, forever bickering with the scarcely inferior genius of David Nykl. Joe Flanigan is a wry, unassuming soldier as devoted to Johnny Cash as to his men. Paul McGillion is a doctor who wears his gentle heart on his sleeve next to his Scottish saltire. In the role of the visitors' first new friend, Rachel Luttrell deploys warmth, martial arts, aristocratic dignity and some bewitchingly lovely singing.

The second season adds Jason Momoa as the epitome of the gruff warrior who speaks seldom and softly but carries a very, very big gun. Mitch Pileggi is an even tougher version of the tough guy we remember from The X-Files. Later, Firefly's Jewel Staite brings her gifts of humour and charm, and Voyager's Robert Picardo his intelligence and wit. Guest stars include The Dead Zone's David Ogden Stiers, Deep Space Nine's Colm Meaney, Enterprise's Connor Trinneer and many familiar faces from the show's parent, Stargate SG-1.

Both inside and out, the marvellous city of Atlantis is much more appealing to the eye than SG-1's concrete bunker. Blu-ray makes the most of the show's often ravishing 16X9 CGI, and does justice too to Joel Goldsmith's grand, sweeping music.

If you're looking for a lively, colourful science fiction series that combines comedy and drama without sacrificing either to the other, this is a BD box that should be close to the top of your shopping list.

I have previously purchased seasons 1-10 of SG-1 and season 1 of Altantis on DVD here in my country South Africa, but I was never able to finish my collection of Atlantis before the sets basically vanished from shelves of retail stores. I was tempted many times in the past to get this box set from a local online retailer, but I waited too long and it too vanished.

I am glad I have this now on Blu-ray. The show's SFX holds up decently enough for Blu-ray and the increase in resolution and sound quality over the DVD's are most welcome. The case itself is a bit weird to me, as it holds all the disks. Some of the disks had come loose during shipping due to the way they are held inside the case, but thankfully nothing was damaged or scratched that I can tell.

Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase and glad that I have this in my collection. One can never have enough Stargate in my view...
