Works Perfectly With A Flex Radio 6400M!

I recently upgraded my amateur radio station to a Flexradio Flex-6400M software defined radio, and wished to be able to automatically tune my Ciro-Mazzoni 'Baby" magnetic loop antenna as I did with the previous transceiver. The 6400M is not provided with a serial port, but it does have a USB 'A' port. By using a USB to RS-232 adapter it seemed possible to control my antenna. Unfortunately the USB drivers built into the radio only recognise the FTDI chipset, so it is important to use an adapter so equipped. The StarTech adapter utilises this chipset, and, in addition has two LEDs to indicate activity on the transmit and receive data lines. The cable is sufficiently long that no extension is necessary, and the pin-outs are in the correct order so that a NUL modem cable is not required either. In my case, after setting the USB configuration in the radio, and setting the Ciro-Mazzoni RS-232 speed and protocol as required, it worked perfectly first time. If you are in a similar position and wish to control, for example, a Step-IR or its Italian equivalent the Ultra-Beam antenna, or otherwise require a serial interface to the radio, then I can thoroughly recommend this adapter as a trouble-free solution.

Indispensable Null Modem cable

Haven't had much cause to use a serial console cable recently ( last time was at work when the laptop itself had a serial port - a few years ago and using Windows !) but used connected to 2 Macs , one Mac clone running OS X 10.8 had the driver downloaded from FTDI web site and soon had it working plugged in to the serial port of a pfSense router/firewall despite the (to me) steep learning curve of Mac "screen" got there eventually and worked well.
Also tried on a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.9 "Mavericks", this has an Apple driver built in and worked perfectly, but referring to the useful information on the FDTI site their driver could be installed but Apple's then needs to be disabled - "if it ain't broke.........". The FTDI installation for OS X pdf is a mine of information especially for retired Windows users ( job and OS )

I had to work on a computer server platform that required this old-school method, so I bought this USB to null modem RS-232 cable. Because this cable is 1m, not long enough to work outside the server rack, I also bought a StarTech DB9 straight-through mail to female serial extension cable (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00A6GIUNC/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_3). You may have to toggle Hardware Flow Control in the serial communication program. It works like a charm with Linux minicom on a laptop and a HP Blade server LAN switch.

This is one of the few models which driver does NOT BSOD Windows 7 since it is implemented with an FTDI chip (unlike similar products the driver for the FTDI chip seems to have been written by actual software developers). Also works with Linux out of the box. 100% reliable. I also found the LEDs to be convenient to make the difference between multiple COM ports connected at the same time. Warning: the null-modem cable is BUILT-IN this product: make sure this is really what you need.

Can confirm that this cable works on Windows 7 64bit and is able to backup and flash a Dream Box 500 S with dreamup. I have tried other cable that use the CH341 driver which may work for other serial devices but not with the Dream Box 500 S
