Ages ago we were given the full set of Jesse Stone DVD’s but the last few were region 1 so via an old Svideo to scart connection we were able to play them on the laptop and watch them in black & white on our LG TV (which has no Svideo inputs). This was very atmospheric, cool & old-school (for those of us brought up on B&W telly) but as we’ve recently started playing an excellent computer based Rummikubs clone, it occurred that it would be much nicer playing on the telly rather than huddled around the little laptop. With coloured tiles, however, B&W is totally useless.
After much research and experimentation, this little cable seemed to be the simplest answer and, not surprisingly, it works perfectly. We now get full colour via the computer’s Svideo output. Not unexpectedly with component video, the picture quality, though not too bad, is not brilliant either. However, while poking about at the back of the telly I noticed an RGB VGA connection. As the laptop also has a VGA output I simply plugged a spare VGA cable that I had knocking about into the respective connectors, messed about a bit in Windows 7 and Bob’s your uncle; a really crisp picture. This inexpensive little cable is therefore redundant for its original purpose, but I’m sure it will come in handy some time or other.
