Product Description

Product Description

The PEXUSB3S4V PCI Express USB 3.0 Card (with SATA Power) adds 4 external USB 3.0 ports to any PCI Express-enabled computer system. SuperSpeed USB 3.0 provides up to 5 Gbps of data bandwidth, while remaining backward compatible with existing USB 2.0 devices at 480Mbps.

Using a "stacked" port layout that places the ports one on top of the other, more ports are able to fit into a smaller space. This 4-port PCIe USB 3.0 adapter enables all four USB 3.0 ports to be external facing, while still allowing the card to fit into a small form factor/low profile computer system.

Plus, with a built-in SATA power connector, each USB port can provide up to 900mA of power to devices that draw power from a host bus connection (500mA for USB 2.0) by connecting to your computer power supply.

The PEXUSB3S4V USB 3.0 PCIe card is backed by a StarTech.com 2-year warranty and free lifetime technical support.

I bought this PCI board after fitting an Inateck PCI-E board. After experiencing the very much increased speed of transfer USB3 supplies I wanted more sockets for my external hard drive collection (7). The board came well package and delivered by Amazon prior to the expected date - well done Amazon. The board was easy to fit in my spare PCI slot. It comes with provision for power connection but does not have to be connected to power unless the sockets need to provide power to devices. Although my hard drives are powered separately I connected the board power with a spare SATA connection without any problem. I rank 4 stars because of the absence of provided power cables - at the price they should be included. There is a big difference in speed of USB3 over USB2 and I now have eight USB3 sockets transferring data to my hard drives some of which are only USB2 but still seem to work faster when connected via USB3. Recommended buy if you want speed of data transfer and only have spare PCI slot.

If this thing had worked properly, it would have been perfect. As it is, almost from from Day One it wouldn't (and still won't) accept or respond to its driver (other than sporadically and unpredictably), no matter how many times I reload it or run Windows through a shut-down, power-off, restart cycle. From the start, It wouldn't withstand a 'hibernate' cycle either (under Windows XP), and so is completely useless to me. I can't even return it now for exchange, because I've missed the date (through trying to make it work rather than accepting that it was u/s from the beginning and getting it replaced), so that's £40+ down the drain as well as a wasted month of effort. I am very fed-up with it, and wish that I had never seen it.

Have just installed this on Packard Bell M5800. It was a bit awkward to fit but that`s due to the chassis design, so after a few choice words of encouragement (not printable) it went in. Does what it says on the box. There is one serious flaw though. Be aware that the sockets go across and not along the bracket so the usb plugs I am using rub on the side of the casing. You might have the same issue.

I purchased this card to install into an HP Microserver N40L to provide USB3 capability. The fact it came with a low profile bracket was key. Also I have had very good experiences with other StarTech devices so knew I could trust them to deliver.

Card delivered promptly and well packaged. Replaced the normal bracket with the low profile bracket and installed into the Microserver without issue. I didn't attach the SATA power connector to the card as I only intend to run 3.5" externally powered USB3 drives from it.

Access to my external USB3 drives seems speedy using this card, and it does what I bought it to do. Great price too.

Although I don't think it's advertised on Amazon, this card supports UASP.

Could not get it to work on windows 8. Could not get it to accept the drivers, went through tech support with manufacturer's still no joy. Apparently a problem on windows 8, tried to force the drivers to be accepted but that failed, in the end fitted it on an older machine that runs XP so main machine still without usb3. So if you are running Windows 8 & purchase this expect problems and the possibility you may not get it running.

When i received this express card i was a bit unsure.I had never put anything inside my computer before,so i was a bit nervous whilst taking the side off(following instructions about earthing, etc) but it was a very easy job to do!You just remove the section from the back that's level with where you want the usb ports to go,fit in the ports and push the express card firmly into place!Easy.I also bought the SATA power cable and connected it to the computer, but i took that out as i only have a usb 3.0 hard-drive plugged into it and that has its own power supply.Anyway, thanks startech.com,it's even helping me learn a bit more about computers!

It works well and saved me from buying a new mainboard but it is so much more expensive that the PCI Express version. Somebody is making a mint out of slightly older technology. It would have got five stars but for the price.

OK so Startech is an unusual brand. They do not employ huge marketing department and you will not see them in every shop, because they cost rather more than typical Chinese electronic and do not appear to have catchy unique selling points - unitil you look into detail.

For example, in this case we have a combination of two best of the crop USB3 chips: Renesas uDP720201 (4 channel USB3 controller for ePCI) and uDP720210 (4 channel USB3 hub). Each connector is protected by a reasonably sized capacitor. The bracket features 4 ports past the hub and 2 ports attached directly to controller. On the inside you will find another single port attached directly to controller (the last port of the controller is driving the hub, obviously).

You could buy cheaper USB3 controller obviously - but it wouldn't have this many ports and also, most likely, it wouldnt have this quality of components. Of course you could instead buy another Startech controller, 4 port where each port is driven by a dedicated Renesas chip for ultimate performance - useful if you need this much bandwidth. I did not, and wanted maximum number of port instead. It works great.

One point to note: due to orientation of USB3 sockets, the USB plugs will fill space of PCI bracket with very little tolerance left. Be sure to plug an USB cable/device/anything into the bracket ports before you close the chassis, otherwise you may need to re-open your computer and readjust the card later.
