From the manufacturer
Bi-directional adapter converts IDE to SATA or SATA to IDE
|
|
|
|
|---|---|---|
|
This is a bi-directional SATA IDE adapter/converter that lets you connect a Serial ATA drive to a legacy IDE port, or an IDE drive to a SATA motherboard port. |
A cost-effective solution for upgrading existing IDE systems to support SATA hard drives or optical drives, the SATA/IDE adapter eliminates the expense of having to purchase a controller card while saving the expansion slot that would be required for card installation. |
In addition to SATA hard drive installation, the adapter can be reversed in order to connect older IDE drives to a newer SATA-enabled motherboard, making it easy to retrieve old files from a previous system. |

At first, my computer's BIOS wouldn't recognise the IDE hard drive at all. The sheet of instructions is very basic and contains no troubleshooting advice. I read other reviews on Amazon looking for ideas, and saw several people mention changing the jumpers on the IDE drive.
As with other reviewers, I found that only Cable Select mode worked - the drive was not detected by the BIOS in either Master nor Slave modes. An added bit of difficulty was that I had to Google how to set the drive's jumpers correctly because the diagram on the hard drive itself was incomprehensible!
Now, I get solid red and green LEDs on this adapter, which I assume means it's operating correctly. Previously, I was only getting a solid red LED.
Both my BIOS and Windows 8 correctly detect the Maxtor IDE drive and I'm able to retrieve the data that I needed and copy it to another drive.
NOTE: My motherboard's SATA controller operates in AHCI mode (setting in the BIOS). This works fine with this adapter and there was no need to change the BIOS setting to work in IDE mode.
They are two-way so can handle SATA to IDE or IDE to SATA convertion and also as I've stated, HDD or optical drives. The connections are clearly marked so it is nigh on impossible to wire these up incorrectly (handy if like me, you're knowledge of such things is limited). What you should note is that they require a SATA power connector in addition to the SATA data cable. There is a single SATA cable supplied in the box. The connected device will also require it's own power supply.
The converter will protrude almost 6cm from the rear of your connected device so you should consider this and ensure you have enough room within your PC case.
Overall, this is an excellent converter, easy to use and I should also add that StarTech has excellent on-line customer support via a chat facility. You can't go wrong with this one.
The reason for this being; keyed IDE female connections are always a "mirror image" of the male headers. This means that the wiring of the "male" ide pins on your drive/device will be in the same orientation as the "male" header on the mobo...and all "female" cable connectors will maintain an opposite/mirrored image of those "male" counterparts.
Therefore in order to use this "female" ide-sata converter with another "female" connection at the drive end of your ide cable...you will need to purchase a special set of male gender changer pins which actually "flip"/"mirror" the orientation of the pins from one connection to the other...otherwise the device will not be recognised as the pins are in the complete opposite orientation to one another. The aforementioned gender changers do exist, however they are a rarity (the more common variant being a simple 40pin gender changer, which wont work however as it doesn't provide the necessary pin "re-orientation" that is essential for this configuration to work).
So be aware that this converter will really only work if you have the space to plug it directly into the ide header on your mobo, but if you - like me with my imac g4 - don't have the physical space for this (and have to use a ribbon cable to move the adapter out of the way), then you'll ideally need to order a different converter. One with male pins as opposed to a female connection ***The same company "StarTech" actually have an alternative available here; http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-Pin-PATA-SATA-Adapter/dp/B00EOJNGC2/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1446313794&sr=1-3&keywords=startech+sata+ide***

of the msata SSD, when I had a 2 1/2 inch SSD in the much older computer with the OS already installed.
Just plug this little adapter in the msata socket on the mother board. Secure it with the provided screws and plug your external SSD drive cable in. Windows, of course, detected the change but accepted the new hardware with no hassle.
The pins on my unit were set exactly the way I wanted (extend two m2s into a single logical unit), I still had to go through the power cycle with the unit on SET, shut down, move the shorting bridge back to its default position and power up. As soon as that was done, the computer immediately recognized the drive and wanted to format it.
The only criticism I have (and its minor) is a little diagram showing where the pins are on the card. It took me way longer to understand what the instruction card was referring to, and the pins the instruction card refers to are on opposite sides of the card.
But this is exactly what I wanted, exactly what I needed, it was super easy to install and get running, I would recommend.
