Construction is solid and attractive, neat case that takes the drive and the three leads comfortably - unlike other caddies.
A few words of caution:
Some drives will not run happily on 500mA. You may find USB connection works only with the extra USB power connection lead in, but eSATA does not. Make sure the hard drive you install will be happy on 500mA (USB standard current).
Depending on your hardware and OS, you may or may not be able to "safely remove" this hardware in eSATA mode. Do NOT just pull the plug if no "safely remove" option is available - the drive will not be parked. To remove hot, go into device manager, select the drive and uninstall it - you'll hear it wind down - then remove it. You may also find that the drive will not always detect when hot plugged - again down to OS and hardware. Recent kit and OS should be largely OK - XP can be flakey!
One star lost because the above potential problems could and should have been outlined by Startech in their "manual" which only covers driver installation; and because the USB power lead should be longer to work easily with eSATA.
The case is of good built quality, although the internal socket device is a bit flimsy (but no different to any other models). It was nice to see the case being supplied with both USB and eSATA cables.
Connecting up the internal drive to the case was easy, using the supplied screwdriver. Connecting to your PC (via USB) requires two USB sockets - one for the data, and one for power. I tried to connect using only the USB via a socket that had power output, but the drive didn't work. Therefore this drive will always require two sockets in your PC regardless of whether you use USB or eSATA. This is a shame, as other external USB cases I have bought did not require the extra socket.
In Windows 8 however, the operating system refused to see the drive after it was connected. I had to go into the Disk Management utility and Initialize the drive as a GPT partition (Windows gives you the option for GPT/MBR when you select 'Initialize'). Once done, the drive was then formatted as NTFS and was readily available. This will probably be a disk issue, so I'm not marking the case down, but its something to be aware of.
When I then unplugged it and connected via eSATA, for some reason it took Windows about two minutes to show it in My Computer. The transfer speeds afterwards however were very good:
eSATA Write (20 x 160mb files) = 97.4 megabytes per sec
eSata Write (20 x 15gb files) = 125 megabytes per sec
These were around what I expected, and I appreciate will be dependant on the drive fitted inside.
Overall this is a nice case. It's a bit of shame about the need to use two sockets.
Like a previous reviewer, plugging this in to my Dell laptop's E-SATA port shows a SATA-2 disk only to be working at SATA-1 speed. Just to be sure it wasn't an anomaly with my particular disk (Seagate Blue), I borrowed a colleague's Samsung 830 SSD - and got exactly the same problem.
Startech don't want to know - I raised this with their US Support, who had never heard of the problem before - and alleged the issue must be with my drive. Not so.
Disappointed. I've since ordered an ESATA cable with power for about a fiver, which my colleague with the Samsung SSD uses. Plugged that in, connected my Seagate and it immediately saw it as SATA-2. This cable costs just over a fiver - search for Wentronic 0.5m HDD Power eSATA Cable eSATA I-Type to SATA HDD Plug.
The new drive fitted to the connectors without trouble, although getting it into the caddy was a little tricky. This proved to be due to two small adhesive pads on the back of the board, that get stuck when pushing the drive in. The first went on the second use and the second followed shortly afterwards. I guess they're only to provide minimum cushioning for the unit and aren't essential but a shame they weren't more effective.
The casing is metal and gives a sense of solidity, albeit only very thin. It has two LED lights built into one that shows green for operating and red flickering for activity.
Worked perfectly so far and I am now using it for the obsolete drive, removed from the MCP, to access old files, etc.
