I wish I could match the eloquence of the detractors, the naysayers and the Luddites, but I can't. As a 60 something who was there in 77 (and every year thereafter), I sat I n the IMAX in Glasgow this evening, and I was lost to the world for 135 minutes of glorious Star Wars escapism. Doubtless this was dull and repetitive for those who sought it to be dull and repetitive, but for me, a man totally happy to sell his heart in exchange for a couple of hours of joyous space based escapism, this rang every bell in my willing brain. I will keep my jaundiced overly analytical side for Radio 4. When Star Wars comes to town, I will willingly tag along for the thrills and giggles. This movie delivered on a grand scale. I loved every second of it.

I have been a lifelong Star wars fan and this is the best Star Wars film since 1983.
The hate I see for this film baffles me, but to each their own. It is one of the most purely enjoyable cinematic experiences I have had in years.
I watched it five times in the cinema and was literally counting down the days for the Blu Ray. I watched it last night and stand by my original opinion that it is my fourth favourite Star Wars film - I rank it just below Return Of The Jedi and its leagues above anything from that Prequel Trilogy.

The Blu Ray comes with a nice 'Light Side' slipcase. (Dark Side also available)The logo and blue frame are embossed, the white part is matt.
The sleeve of the Blu Ray itself features the (oddly framed) movie poster.
The discs are housed in a standard blue amaray case.
Disc one is the movie ONLY. Disc two has the bonus features

PICTURE AND SOUND: The sound is perfect. The balance between dialogue and music is spot on. The picture quality is excellent but didn't blow me away. Thats due to the fact that The Force Awakens was shot on film and not digitally. It looks darn near perfect though, but keep this is mind.

SUBTITLES: English, French, Spanish and Portuguese

SPECIAL FEATURES: It's things like this that make me a fan of the physical format. Note: The DVD version has absolutely NO features. All features on the Blu Ray are presented in HD with optional subtitles.

Secrets of 'The Force Awakens': A Cinematic Journey is a wonderful 70 minute documentary that I wish was even longer.

Having read a number of the reviews on here after seeing the film, I can easily see where many of the one star reviewers are coming from (if you ignore the sad ones who just want to post spoilers). Yes, there are a number of scenes in The Force Awakens which aren't entirely unrelated to similar scenes in A New Hope. Others see it as a total rip-off, I didn't see it that way. My comparison would be a long-awaited new album by my favourite band. Do I want them to go down a different path? No, I want new tracks that sound like my favourite band, and that's what The Force Awakens delivers. My wife and I watched A New Hope the day before, and I didn't feel that we were watching the same film again. Rather, we had the same excitement that I first felt in the 1970s when I saw the original in a flea pit in Glasgow, and we went along as very willing passengers on the ride.

Other reviewers have said that Disney / JJ Abrams have betrayed the legacy of George Lucas, for me it's exactly the opposite, this film is absolutely, unapologetically, Star Wars, fully deserving of a place at the table of the three originals. The second three for me were ponderous and earthbound, this is the real deal. It's not meant to be something totally original, it's a treat for those who loved the originals and a chance for a new audience to come on the journey. Roll on the next one.

Ok so it retreads the basic structure of the original Star Wars but so what? It's not as if A New Hope itself was so original - has nobody seen the Dambusters or Hidden Fortress? Personally I was just relieved to see the first decently directed Star Wars film since Empire. That's 35 years of plodding scripts and hack helmers folks. Critics should remember that most of this series actually comes off a pretty low base before getting on their high horses.

With this set-up and this budget all you really need is someone with the technical chops to deliver it but also the brains to apply restraint where it matters - and JJ certainly does all that in spades. I was reminded at times of Fellowship Of The Ring: impressive special effects perfectly blended into real landscapes while resisting the temptation to throw the book at everything. Hope the sequels learn the lesson.

It was actually a refreshing change to watch a modern blockbuster that remembers how to move with pace and not tie itself up in clutter, complexity and laboured 'character arcs' like so many recent Marvel efforts do. Peter Jackson would probably make a nine hour trilogy out of the 30-year backstory alone, but Abrahms and Kasdan just make it simple while implying a lot in a few terse sentences.

The history and original characters are honoured but more importantly the new stars are engaging, likable and intriguing (well done Mr Driver - love the toys out of the pram moments). The surprises and emotional elements work without being flogged to death, and the whole thing learns to be joyous and fun again. Great stuff.
