The book itself is lovely, full colour throughout, really big, and very well laid out, with gorgeous illustrations on nearly every page.
The game mechanics, with the fancy special dice, seem to be a very intuitive system, that should prove very quick and easy to play with. I've downloaded the SW Dice app, as at only £3 is a lot cheaper than the dice(which you'll probably want at least 2 sets of) although will no doubt invest in these sooner rather than later.
The focus is on narrative dramatic gameplay, rather than a nitpicking stat heavy rigid structure, and this is reinforced repeatedly through the whole book, meaning that even novice RPG players or beginners(as my kids are) will find this very easy to pick up with a good GM willing to tease out their best story making instincts.
I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into this, and both my kids, and even my other half are all eager to embark on their adventures on the edge of a galaxy far far away.
I'm going to split this review into two parts, the RPG and one for the book itself .
I'm by far not an experienced reviewer of table top RPGs by far, but I must stress how much I adore running Edge of the Empire. For me it's all in the dice system, the only con being these dice being sold separately which feels a bit nickel and dimey.
But! These dice doesn't only show if you succeeded at a given roll, as there are modifiers on the dice wich can lead to you succeed with a test, but at the same time you rolled a "despair" symbol, meaning something far less than ideal happens to the player even tho they rolled a success.
This makes the system highly flexible and keeps everyone at the table at their toes.
Otherwise there are comprehensive rules for everything from the characters obligations to space combat, all is well written and easily understood.
The book: high quality hardback with durable pages. The text is easy to read and the layout with headlines are broken up with amazing artwork and sidenotes to make an easy but pleasing read.
There is no wall of text anywhere in the book.
I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good system and if you love Star Wars this is a must try!
First of 3 core rulebooks but acts as it's own standalone rule set, which has the same game mechanic as the others. Only catch is that you need specialist dice to play or you can just buy the official dice app.
Bought from the book depository and arrived within 3 days, at least a week before expected delivery date, generally very pleased with this product and the service I was provided.
