I've had issues with Star Trek fiction in the past, I've on times found it to be written by quite self indulgent authors who adapt characters to their own means, so it doesn't really ring true compared to what watchers of the series expected/were used too.
However, here David Mack has done an outstanding job. Each of the familiar characters acts and feels like 'themselves' and as a result this engages you into the story far more easily.
The Borg are back, as they are in so many of the novels, and while their attacks and the threat they give is a major part of the book, the author writes very well about the personal struggles of Picard as his single mindedness regarding the Borg comes through, just as it did in the First Contact movie, in many ways, this is the main conflict with the Borg in this book. I'm sure more is to come though.
Other story arcs involve the NX-02 Columbia at the start of the Earth-Romulan war, Captain Dax investigating a downed ship and Captain Riker, both on mission with the Titan and in his personal life with Troi.
The story itself is mostly set up for the other books (as you'd imagine from the opening book of a trilogy) but is fast paced and engaging. Four stories interweave well complimenting each other as they go (particularly the Dax/Columbia storylines). On occasion they jump around a little much, but generally this isn't an issue.
Really looking forward to #2 which is already sat waiting on my Kindle!

Synopsis
The Borg return -- with a vengeance! Blitzkreig attacks by the single-minded aliens with their hive mentality and their mission to assimilate every intelligent being they encounter are leaving whole worlds aflame. No one knows how they are slipping past Starfleet's defences, so Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise crew are detailed to find out -- and to put a stop to it if they can. Meanwhile, thousands of light years away, Captain Will Riker and the crew of the Titan follow bizarre energy pulses to a mysterious, hidden world. There they find a figure out of legend: a Starfleet captain long thought dead. And at the same time, over in the Gamma Quadrant, newly promoted Captain Dax and her crew investigate the wreck of the Earth starship Columbia NX-02, missing in action for more than two centuries.

I bought this book because a friend had given me books 2 and 3 of the trilogy and my local library were unable to get hold of the 1st book for me.
Star Trek Destiny - Gods of Night incorporates many of the past series features into the story with the exception (so far, I'm only part of the way through the 2nd book) the Original Series.
I enjoyed Gods of Night so much that instead of picking up some other reading material to give myself a break from the subject, I went straight onto book 2.
For a seasoned Star Trek fan, I think this is a great read, but an overall knowledge of the subject material is needed.

This is the the first book I've read of Star Trek. I'm normally reading adventure fantasy books but I've always been a Trek fan. Anyway, the plot was interesting and involved characters that I knew well.
The book began in the dominion war when the USS Defiant wonders upon the NX-02 in the Gama Quadrant. The discovery left a lot of unanswered questions; how can an Alpha Quadrant Starship end up so far away from Earth? Could there be an undiscovered propulsion they stumbled upon? What happened to the crew? The plot continually grows through this book, involving the 'next generation' and 'DS9' Characters. I found this book captivating and hard to put down. I would recommend all three books of Star Trek Destiny.

This is the first part of a 3 part story, involving just about everybody in the Star Trek universe, as well as introducing some characters from pre-federation times.
It can be a little confusing at first, as it jumps around the time lines, but then the majority of the book follows the crew from the 'past' and what happens to them.
A little on the slow side to start, and jumping around a bit, but then it hits its stride and I couldn't put it down.

I enjoyed this book, had some of my favourite characters and ships, it does jump back and forth a lot, but then it has good reason too, also I do like any stories with the Borg, and this new perspective of them and what they do means some body in history some where some time has really really, to say politely annoyed the heck out of them, perhaps they just lost one to many battles against the federation or spieces 8472 and it shows :)

Enjoyed reading what would have made an excellent star trek movie back in the day
Although as usual I'm not a huge fan of the way Picard is portrayed

Lets be honest Star Trek novels are fun pulp fiction, great for the beach, train or aeroplane. And with that in mind this was an entertaining and well plotted and paced book. My only real gripe were the new characters which I assume were created by other authors and some of the sub plots again I assume carried over from other previous books, which seemed a little silly or unlikely even in a fantasy world such as star trek. The T-Rex doctor was, I'm afraid, just plain annoying. I've bought the next one in the series.
