4.0 out of 5 stars Take care when buying this book if you own Outward Leg! 23 Dec. 2014
By Patrick Terry - Published on
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
If you love sailing, you have probably read Tristan Jones. I recall his paperback book Saga of a Wayward Sailor, with its illustration of him and his black dog in a rolling sea, was quite popular in the '80 s. Lovers of British authors would also be happy with his stories, which don't all take place at sea.
If you are trying to collect all his books and piece together the fantastic events of his life, it is only fair and proper that I warn you: The text of this book is precisely the same as his book Outward Leg. Perhaps A star to steer her by is an English publisher, while his U.S. publisher wanted the title Outward Leg, with a photo of his trimaran Outward Leg on the cover.
Content wise, this book covers the part of his life after he returned from the Amazon, and sailed the highest lake in the world. He had a venous occlusion in his leg mis-diagnosed in Amsterdam, and a couple weeks later in New York had one leg amputated. Searching for a new boat which would suit his one-leg condition he found a trimaran which would serve his dream of world circumnavigation in San Diego. He then sailed thru the Panama Canal and spent a lengthy time on the dangerous Colombia coast. Then the Antilles, New York, across the Atlantic, and back to London.
If this could be any use, here is a simple guide to Tristan Jones in the correct order, starting with his childhood at sea.
A steady trade
Heart of oak
Saga of a wayward sailor and Seagulls in my soup
The incredible voyage
Outward Leg or A star to steer her by and Adrift
The Improbable voyage
Somewheres east of Suez
Happy reading and wishing you some WIND!
