5.0 out of 5 stars Good book to learn about using a sextant 5 Feb. 2017
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Good entry level book to learn how to use a sextant in conjunction with the necessary Nautical Almanac lookups (excerpts included for examples), plotting lines of position, and computing a fix by celestial observations with a sextant. It is well arranged and easy for a beginner to work though. Manual celestial navigation require a accurate observations, then step by step lookups of data from a Nautical Almanac and entry into tables to determine you eventual location (fix). This book walks you though the steps in a systematic way.

5.0 out of 5 stars No GPS required 31 Mar. 2014
By RMH - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I recently bought this book for a friend who wanted to learn to navigate offshore, using a sextant. This book taught me to do just that about 30 years ago. It is still my choice for people who want to learn this skill.

This book was published long before GPS was available, and so it teaches the pure skill, with no modern technology involved. It starts at the very beginning, so if you have no background at all, you can still master the process. It works like a programmed text, with problems to solve at each stage of learning. All the tables that are needed to solve the problems in the workbook are included--as are the answers, to see how well you are doing. You will not need any other resource (nautical almanac or sextant, etc), while using this book.

Once you understand the concepts, and can solve the problems in the book, you are ready to take your own sights and reduce them. All the helpful worksheets are included in the back of the book, so you can take and reduce your own sights--whether they be sun, moon, or stars. (Of course, then, you will need the current nautical almanac, and a sextant).

I heartily endorse this book if you want to learn how to navigate offshore, with a sextant. If you are interested in learning how to use GPS, this book is not for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars review of A STAR TO STEER HER BY 16 Feb. 2013

I haven't finished it yet, but it has been very good so far. This has been a very good purchase. I also bought the recommended chart of Marthas vineyard which has proven much less handy.

5.0 out of 5 stars You won't get lost 26 Mar. 2012

You read and practice this ,practice of course is the key! Meaning you really do sail and go way out of sight of any land, shut down your GPS or check how you do in case of... You need this book and master it -> Free to sail as you please then. Great, great, book. (If you are not going to really do this, but are professionally oriented or interested on the subject then makes just nice reading also).
