I've been searching for a good overview of the Mesolithic period that was accessible to a non-specialist, and I didn't at first consider this because I thought it was going to concentrate just on the Starr Carr site. But I eventually decided to give it a try, and I'm very glad I did. This is a brilliant book, clear, lucid, well-illustrated and up to date, illuminating not only the excavations in Yorkshire, but the Mesolithic society that produced this fascinating place. My one gripe was that it could have been twice as long, and gone into more detail, but for an armchair archaeologist like me, it's a great introduction to the subject.

This is how an archaeology book should be produced. It is packed with superb colour illustrations and diagrams. The text is full of accurate detail and the interpretation is logical. Most of all the text is fluent and rolls along at a great pace and gives a great overview of both Star Carr and the Mesolithic in general. I finished reading it within a couple of hours. I was so pleased that John Moore was given great credit for his work on the site. I could read it over again easily. A first class book.

Very interesting book. But if campsite at Star Carr was much bigger than originally thought, why show only 6 lodges in artists reconstruction? 20-30 would be more accurate. Also, the supposed 'house' found there seems a bit small, don't u think? It must have been a structure built for some other purpose.
